Year 11 Health Education offers students the opportunity to engage with arguably the most important industry in New Zealand. Without healthy and knowledgeable individuals, communities and the greater society we don't have a productive and thriving country. You will learn how to communicate effectively and observe issues from different perspectives, allowing you to plan and take action.

Year 11 Health Education will support personal growth by helping students manage their own well-being; make health-enhancing choices; and use interpersonal skills to critically examine the socio-cultural aspects of the world around you.
Level 1 Health Education will provide you with foundation knowledge and pathways into potential careers in: health sciences, health research, education, psychology, medicine, sociology, philosophy, politics, mental health advocacy, nutrition, law, economics, medicine, health consultancy, justice, and social services, nursing, youth workers, community/social workers, teaching, counselling, health promotion, radiologist, dentist, doctor, general practitioner, nurse, acupuncturist, physiotherapist, wellness specialist, occupational therapist, social worker, podiatrist and public relations
The main focus of Level 1 Health Education is to equip you with the skills and knowledge to critically examine the effect of health determinants on Hauora at a personal, interpersonal and societal level, with a particular focus on the influences, consequences and strategies of these effects.
Health is a valued subject which will enable you to think about yourselves, your identity, strengths and attributes in a safe and inclusive environment. This course aims to establish relationships and understanding for you to become knowledgeable and reflective about your personal health and well-being. Health Education makes relates well to other curriculum subjects such as Physical Education, History, English and Te Ao Māori.
Key topics of the course will be:
Take health-promoting action at Wellington College and in your community
Develop and effectively use interpersonal and leadership skills to enhance relationships
Set health related goals (e.g working out in the gym) to enhance our Hauora
Build resilience in order to manage change and stressful situations
Investigate how we can create healthy communities and environments, for all
Think critically about a range of personal and societal health practices
Q - Can I study Year 11 Health Education, Year 11 Physical Education and Year 11 Academy of Sport?
A - Not in Year 11. However, you can choose to study all three in NCEA Level 2. You can study Health Education and either Physical Education or Academy of Sport.
Q - Is Year 11 Health Education a university pathway?
A - Yes, up to 30 students each year will study Year 11 Academy of Sport all the way through to Year 13 Health Education gaining University Entrance (14 Credits at Level 3).
Q- Can students who study Year 11 Health Education take Health and Physical Education Scholarship?
A - Yes, HPE scholarship is open to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students who study Health Education, Academy of Sport and or Physical Education.

Year 11 Health Education is assessed using our WC Learning Progression Framework and provides an excellent foundation for students wishing to continue onto NCEA Level 2 Health Education.
