In health and physical education, the focus is on the well-being of the students themselves, of other people, and of society through learning in health-related and movement contexts.
New Zealand Curriculum
Year 11 Academy of Sport combines both practical and theoretical components of Physical Education. A key focus is developing students through physical training, skill analysis and development, self-reflection and learning how to think critically about sports performance and enhancement.
The vision for the academy is “to support students to reach their potential as outstanding sportsmen and outstanding young men”.
It is hoped you will have the ability to perform at an elite under 18 level by the time you reach your final year at school. This includes performance on the field, fitness standards and tactical knowledge. Academy of Sport members will be offered a variety of rich learning experiences and assessment opportunities that will build on their knowledge of training principles and techniques, as well as offering an insight into the world of professional sport.
This course is a part of the development pathway for aspiring young sportsmen. In addition, it will open up opportunities for you to continue study in Physical Education at Level 2 and beyond.

This course will develop students both mentally and physically. The key areas of focus are:
fitness testing and programme development
skill analysis and development (aligned with the principles of biomechanics, functional anatomy and exercise physiology)
leadership and interpersonal skills
Analysing components of fitness in sport
sports performance review
Q - Can I study both Year 11 Academy of Sport and Year 11 Physical Education?
A - Not in Year 11. However, you can choose to study both subjects in NCEA Level 2.
Q - What is the differences between Year 11 Academy of Sport and Year 11 Physical Education courses?
A - These courses are similar in content but the focus for the Sports Academy is developing students through physical training, skill analysis and learning how to think critically about sports performance and enhancement. Movement in our school work out facilities is one phase of learning as is working independently and with others on skill development within their chosen sport.
Entrance to Year 11 Academy of Sport is through application only.
Q - Is Year 11 Academy of Sport a university pathway?
A - Yes, between 60-90 students each year will study Year 11 Academy of Sport all the way through to Year 13 Physical Education gaining University Entrance (14 Credits at Level 3).
Q- Can students who study Year 11 Academy of Sport take Health and Physical Education Scholarship?
A - Yes, HPE scholarship is open to all Year 11, 12 and 13 students who study Physical Education, Academy of Sport and or Health Education.

At the completion of this course you should be able to:
Participate in physical activities (sport, games and training), and describe how this influences well-being
Demonstrate knowledge of body structure and function in a physical activity.
Demonstrate the movement of various physical activities.
Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes.
Demonstrate interpersonal skills (related to leadership) in a group and explain how these skills impact on others.
Understand your strengths and weaknesses in regards to components of fitness and sports performance.
Understand the dynamics of effective training.
If you wish to apply for entry into the Wellington College Academy of Sport you will need to be a motivated athlete aspiring to become first team players while at Wellington College and/or regional representative players in your chosen sport(s). To gain entry into this course, you need to fill out the online application form which can be found here on the Academy of Sport website.
Year 11 Academy of Sport is assessed using the WC Learning Progression Framework and provides an excellent foundation for students wishing to continue onto NCEA Level 2 Academy of Sport, Physical Education or Performance Physical Education courses.
