Technology is intervention by design. It uses intellectual and practical resources to create technological outcomes, which expand human possibilities by addressing needs and realising opportunities. Effective and ethical design respects the unique relationship that New Zealanders have with their physical environment and embraces the significance of Māori culture and world views in its practice and innovation. - New Zealand Curriculum

WHY STUDY technology AT YEAR 10?

Through technology education, you have the opportunity to develop a broad technological literacy and to experience and explore a wide range of technologies in a variety of contexts that will enable you to participate as informed participants in an ever-changing world.

Technology is intervention by design: the use of practical and intellectual resources to develop products and systems that expand human possibilities by addressing needs and realising opportunities. Innovation is at the heart of technology practice. Quality outcomes result from creative thinking and practices that are informed, critical and creative.

The course prepares you so that you are, by the end of the year, ready for the demands of NCEA L1 for Materials Technology, Digital Technology plus Design and Visual Communication.

What will I learn?

Technology is never static. It is influenced by, and in turn impacts on the cultural, ethical, environmental, political and economic conditions of the day. The aim is for you to develop a broad technological literacy that will equip you to participate in society.

You will learn practical skills as you work with clients to develop models, products and systems. Technological areas include Materials, Design & Visual Communication and Digital.

Building on from Year 9, the Year 10 course provides opportunities for you to explore the context in more detail, designing more resolved, detailed products.  We welcome you to bring you own expertise and passions into the subject.

What WILL I DO?

You will work through a range of projects covering a variety of contexts.

Topics Covered:

wHAT will I NEED?

The course flows on from the material studied in Year 9, but a greater level of technological literacy is explored.

No previous experience in Technology is required, however you are invited to bring your expertise and passions into the subject through your projects.

Portfolio work is documented in google classroom so you will need to bring your device to each lesson.  If you want to take full advantage of your Adobe Creative Cloud license a laptop or Mac is recommended, however we do have school computers for those students with Chromebooks.

Please come prepared to lessons with stationary such as pencils and pens.

How is this course assessed?

Students will create a portfolio of work which will be used to assess against the curriculum. Learning and assessment take place alongside each other in Technology, with due dates communicated at the start of each project.

This course is assessed using our WC Learning Progression Framework and provides an excellent foundation for students to continue on to any Year 11 Technology courses.

We hope you have a successful and interesting year!!
