Music has a huge impact on our well-being. We have known for a long time how important music is - how important the creative expression of music is, how much music can add to our lives. Beyond that, studying and playing music has a huge impact on brain development, and is beneficial to all avenues of life. Music helps us with social relationships, physical health, mental wellbeing, academic study, and the list goes on. It is not a coincidence that many of this school’s top scholars have involvement in the musical life of the school and that our musicians are mature and thoughtful students who are kind and mindful of themselves and others. For many of our musicians, Year 10 Music was where they really began to explore the creative opportunities that Music offers.
Many of the Year 10 Music class carry on with the subject into Year 11, NCEA, and beyond. It is a particularly suitable course for those of you with an aptitude and interest in music. The course should not necessarily be seen as a preparation for a career option “What can I do with music ...?” but should be viewed as an opportunity to extend a musical interest and ability and ultimately part of an all-round balanced education. Many students develop a life-long interest and a creditable critical understanding through a continued musical education at school.
We offer two Year 10 Music Courses. Each course has the same assessment activities, though the context these are run in is slightly different. In each class you will perform, compose, analyse music, and engage with music technology. You will also develop skills in music theory and music literacy.
10MUG - General Music offers a broad range of musical experiences that include composition, group performance, and musical analysis. You will engage with a range of musical contexts that include NZ Music, World Music, Western Art Music, and Contemporary Musical styles. This is a good choice for our instrumentalists and singers, or those who are interested in a range of musical style.
10MUB - Band Class focuses on developing musical skills within a contemporary band context. You will explore contemporary popular/rock styles of music through forming bands within the class and focus on developing skills on a chosen instrument. You will develop performance and song writing skills as well as Musical Literacy within group context. This is a good choice for those who are interested in being in a band, singer-songwriters, and those interested in more contemporary styles of music.

In line with current music education practice, Year 10 Music aims to develop and further encourage literacy in music through an interweaving of four strands:
Learning the language of music
Developing ideas in music
Communicating and interpreting meaning in music
Understanding music in context
You will be supported in developing creativity and confidence in sharing their creative work. You will gain an appreciation of a wide range of musical contexts, explore different methods of creating music, and engage with conventions of Musical Literacy.
While we offer two Year 10 Music Courses, each will prepare you for Year 11 Music, but will have different focuses.
Across both courses we aim to offer a broad range of musical experiences that include composition, group performance, and musical analysis. You will engage with a range of musical contexts including music technology, music from Aotearoa, and a wide range of musical styles. Both our courses will also provide you with a solid foundation of Musical Literacy and Theory.
In both Year 10 Music courses, you will develop your:
Creativity through composition and performance activities
Practical Performance through group/solo performance
Aural and Listening through engaging with a wide range of musical styles and distinguishing musical elements, such as rhythm, melody and instrumental sounds
Music Literacy through using musical notation and applying musical theory to composition, practical work, as well as listening activities.
10MUG - General Music aims to expose you to a wide range of musical styles and contexts. You will have the opportunity to engage with a range of instruments and explore how different cultures influence the music they produce. This is a good choice if you aren't quite sure where music is going to take you, or are just generally curious about different aspects of Music.
10MUB - Band Class aims of provide you with a supportive environment to begin your journey into playing in a contemporary band. You will be guided through the process of forming a band, have access to resources to help you specialise on an instrument, and learn how to rehearse and perform as a band. This is a good choice if you already play in a band or know you want to play in a band, or if you are interested in contempory styles of music like Rock, Pop, Reggae, etc.
Both courses provide a solid foundation for students wishing to continue with Music in Year 11.
To be successful in this course, you should:
be prepared to work collaboratively
engage with ideas and music outside your comfort zone
be prepared to perform and present your work in front of your peers
be ready to manage yourself in a non-traditional classroom environment
We understand that the performance elements of music can be a source of anxiety and stress for some of you. We work hard to make our classrooms safe and positive environments for students to explore this. We see Music as being for everyone, so please discuss with us if you are unsure if it's the right choice for you.
There is no requirement that you have prior experience outside of the Year 9 Music course. You also do not need to be learning an instrument for either course. However, we recommend that lessons are considered if you are intending to continue studying Music in Year 11. In some cases, instrumental tuition can be arranged for those wishing to begin an instrument in Year 10 at school.
Please feel free to discuss courses with the HOD of Music, and also to talk with students at school who have taken Music as an option in Year 10 and above. As with some languages, it is not always possible for you to pick up Music later if it is dropped at the end of Year 9.
You will be assessed on tasks based on composition, analysis, musical knowledge, music software, and performance. Full details will be provided to you through the course workbooks at the beginning of the year.
Assessment
Formative and summative assessments take place throughout the year. You will be advised of due dates at the start of each term. The WC Learning Progression Framework will be used for all summative assessments.
Assessment in the Junior School
This course is assessed using our WC Learning Progression Framework and provides an excellent foundation for students wishing to continue into Year 11 Music.
Both the Year 10 Music courses are co-constructed and planned by all staff members. We regularly review our coursework to ensure that we are responsive to our students and the curriculum.
