10MAT - MATHEMATICS

PĀNGARAU

Kei hopu tōu ringa ki te aka tāepa, engari kia mau ki te aka matua.

Mathematics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Statistics is the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in data. These two disciplines are related but different ways of thinking and of solving problems. Both equip students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live. - New Zealand Curriculum

A small group of Year 10 students will be invited to jump over our 10MAT course, directly into our accelerated programme (11MCA).
The 11MCA course prepares students to sit Cambridge Mathematics A Level exams along side NCEA Level 2 and 3 in their senior years.
In Year 10, students in 11MCA complete NCEA Level 1 and develop the fundamentals needed for the Cambridge Mathematics course.
Invited students will receive an email at the end of Year 9. Click on the yellow button to the right to read more about this course.

WHY STUDY MATHEMATICS AT YEAR 10?

Year 9 and Year 10 courses teach the basic concepts of Mathematics. There is an emphasis on maintenance and development of skills. These courses provide the groundwork for further study in Mathematics at senior levels, and develop skills to aid in the analysis and solution of mathematical problems met in everyday life.

Mathematics is the abstract science of number, quantity, and space, either as abstract concepts (pure mathematics), or as applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering (applied mathematics). In the first year of study at Wellington College we provide opportunities for you to:

What will I learn?

Topics Covered

Arithmetic, Algebraic Skills and Problem Solving will be maintained and developed. Geometry, Measuerment and Statistics will be studied, and Trigonometry will be seen for the first time.

What WILL I DO?

In Year 10 you will complete application based problems and will ensure that they communicate their answers clearly using correct mathematical language.

You will develop mathematical reasoning skills, pattern spotting and creative problem solving skills.

In completing Year 10 Mathematics you will have covered the majority of skills for NCEA Level 1 and will be preparing to apply them to higher level questions.

You will learn independent work habits and self management in a mathematics environment.

You will develop the ability to communicate clearly using correct mathematical language and will be able to use this language to aid solving new problems.

wHAT will I NEED?

A good attitude and a willingness to work hard, ask questions and actively participate in learning opportunities.

How is this course assessed?

NCEA Assessments

Formative and summative assessments take place throughout the year. You will be advised of the dates by your mathematics teacher. There will be multiple in-class checkpoints throughout the term. There will also be a numeracy corequisite assessment in Term 3. Information will be sent home about this throughout the year.

We hope you have a successful and interesting year!
