The Integrated Studies course recognises that students develop capabilities for lifelong learning at different paces. The course is designed to support students as they develop the confidence in their essential skills so that they can become active and connected in their learning. Students will focus on their ability to use language, and to manage their own learning in relation to others as a positive contributor, so that they can develop their ability to show their thinking.

This course is designed to develop self-motivation in students who are able to apply strategies to problems in all areas of the curriculum so that they feel they are capable as learners.
Year 10 Integrated Studied is important because it:
Supports lifelong learning skills such as self-management, participation, thinking and using language, symbols and texts
Is designed to give you confidence that you can be an active learner in all courses
Supports students to develop Literacy
Supports students to enjoy success in all subjects at WC
The focus of 10INT is literacy. We hope that by focusing on developing awareness of when to apply specific strategies students will become able to apply strategies in other subjects. We hope that this will improve their ability to manage themselves.
In Year 10 Integrated Studies, you will be given time and support with assignments and classwork for your other subjects.
You will also spend time completing activities to build your literacy skills, which will in turn support in building confidence to engage in learning across all subject areas.
Students who get the most out of this course are open and honest learners who accept the support available to develop their essential literacy skills. You’ll need to bring a great attitude to class which means that you are a willing learner, able to work with others and to support others as you persevere through school challenges.
Successful students in Integrated Studies will build on their existing literacy skills by to being:
Willing to listen and engage openly in the ideas of others in a range of forums.
Able to receive and provide feedback to their peers.
Resilient and able to persist when dealing with challenges.
Students who would benefit from additional literacy support will be offered 10INT as an option subject. You will be offered the opportunity to be in the course based on entry results, and teacher observations.
Assessment for 10INT will be observational and teachers will be looking to see how well students are developing key capabilities such as thinking, using language, symbols and texts, managing self, relating to others, and participation and contributing.
Assessment in the Junior School
The Junior Assessment Framework (JAF) is used to assess all students in Years 9 & 10. It is designed to measure and develop students’ thinking skills. It is based on SOLO taxonomy and has strong links to the NZ Curriculum levels. See the documents linked here for more information – one explains the JAF in a basic way and the other is the framework itself, which shows how the different levels of thinking are graded.
