The vision for the Wellington College Academy of Sport is “to support students to reach their potential as outstanding sportsmen and outstanding young men”.
This course is based in the training facility in the Frank Crist Centre. The programme will sit outside of the regular timetable (during lunchtime), and will run twice in each week. Here as an athlete you have direct access to first class training resources and along with your classroom teacher, may work with the school’s Strength and Conditioning Coach, who designs their bodyweight programmes.
An outline of the course requirements can be found here
The Junior Academy will focus on developing an understanding of resistance training and how it improves movement and physical skills. It also includes sports psychology, stretching and fitness testing. Presenters also come to talk to the class about their experiences in sports.
Course Outline

The key to success in the Sports Academy, is not just the physical aspect, but requires a commitment to immerse yourself in the surrounding educational aspects of fitness and training. It is a long-term, sustainable, holistic approach to improving a your performance across all skill sets and ability levels.
To gain entry into the Academy, you need to apply online to the Wellington College Academy of Sport. The online application form can be found here on the Academy of Sport website.
Selection criteria are based on a student’s level of performance, and a positive attitude, with priority given to those playing at the higher levels, particularly in sports that are offered at the school.
In order to help cover the cost of the Strength and Conditioning coach there is a suggested donation for this course.
Due to this course sitting outside of the regular timetable there will be no assessment requirements so instead assessment will involve:
Informal observations based on individual and group work with regular feedback and conversations designed to improve student knowledge.
Mentoring discussions will be student centered and will help grow the student as a person (foremost) and within their chosen sports. The sports academy teacher also provides students a sounding board for sport or health related questions.
Formative feedback will be given based on activities. The feedback will be personalised to suit the student.
Students will also assess themselves through goal setting and monitoring of their own wellbeing.
We hope you have a successful and interesting year!
