In Language Arts we will explore language and literature through the reading and writing workshop. The goal of the workshops or a balanced literacy program is to help children not only become better readers and writers, but also enjoy and value it.
In reading, we will focus on improving comprehension and reading strategies. We will read personal novels, class novels, short stories, articles and poetry. Students should also be reading at least 20 minutes a day at home.
Vocabulary plays an important part in learning to read. Since vocabulary is key to reading comprehension, we will study by wide independent reading and direct instruction. Having a rich vocabulary will help your child be a better reader, think more logically and communicate in a more engaging way. Students can practice at home at Freerice.com- even 5 minutes a day will help!
In Writing Workshop, the students will learn the craft of writing through daily practice, conferring and sharing. Grammar, spelling and mechanics will be taught within the workshop. Students will write daily about things that matter to them, with the ultimate goal of developing life-long writers.
