These special class programs serve students who have similar educational needs in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs. Instruction follows the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJLSL) with modifications as needed to provide a successful educational experience for each pupil. Students often function more than two years below their chronological age peers in the specified curriculum area or evidence significant motivational weaknesses requiring a substantially greater degree of individualization and small group instruction. Specialized materials are selected to augment the general education curriculum and specifically meet the individual student’s instructional needs. The pupils in the special class program often require a reduced pace and scope of instruction and a substantial amount of repetition to acquire the skills and content of this curriculum area. Ten pupils may be placed in a self-contained class during a given period; this number may be increased to sixteen when a paraprofessional is added.
Due to the nature and intensity of the language and/or learning disabilities, the students in this program often function three years or more below their chronological age peers and are in need of highly individualized and direct instruction. Instruction follows the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) and/or Essential Elements (EEs) using modifications, intensive reinforcement and supplemental materials to provide a successful educational experience for each pupil. Assistive technology and other compensatory aids are utilized, when appropriate, to maximize students' progress. Focus is on application of academic, social, communication, and behavioral skills throughout activities of daily living. Based upon each pupil's educational needs, the IEP team always considers opportunities for inclusion in mainstream classes. Supplementary aids and services are provided to ensure the success of this initiative. Eight pupils may be placed in a self-contained class during a given period; this number may be increased to twelve when a paraprofessional is provided.
