"‘You Can Do It’, a phrase often heard being belted outside of Mrs. Lauren Ahlert’s biology classroom at Wayne Valley High School, a phrase she has used as her pivotal source of inspiration since she first started teaching here almost twenty-one years ago. From heading up the large science mural that spans a long hallway on the second floor to becoming a class advisor, Mrs. Ahlert has immersed herself in the school culture and in helping her students. Many a day after school, one will find Mrs. Ahlert’s unique and upbeat personality sharing biological wisdom with her students during an after school ‘Friday Session’ where she teaches additional material that is necessary for the national AP exam in May. Bringing vibrant and stimulating PowerPoint presentations of pictures and sounds and animations to every lesson that she teaches, it is no wonder that her students are engaged in every lesson. Very often stuffed figures of microscopic organisms are turned into ‘props’ for reenacting many biological processes and concepts, it almost becomes a biological theater! She finds that the more relatable and tangible the material, the more the student can connect to it. Mrs. Ahlert provides such a deep sense of passion for biology that few students can resist the ability to be drawn towards the subject and towards succeeding in the classroom. In addition, once the exam is over and the remaining laboratory experiments conducted, Mrs. Ahlert hosts a lecture series of various individuals in the science and medical fields. Focusing heavily on compassion and the personal well being of each and every student in the classroom, Mrs. Ahlert teaches her students integrity and respect is everything. "There is nothing more important I can teach you", she expresses almost daily to her students, "than to strive to be the best version of yourself and spread kindness". There is no question that Mrs. Ahlert lives up to her own catch phrase, with her level of heartfelt dedication to both biology and integrity and respect in the classroom, few students would disagree that in her class, "You can do it!"
Success is heavily based on many factors but perhaps one of the most integral is support. September 2001 her former boss, mentor, and friend took a chance on her as an alternate route teacher with a true zeal for biology and a desire to inspire others to be 'bit by the bio bug'. That support that started almost 21 years ago has been the cornerstone for her success as an educator in the Wayne Township School District and has been a part of every situation or scenario of her career. Exceptional leaders like Mr. Brian Faehndrich, whose support extends beyond the average administrator and whose guidance has been paramount to her achievements especially these past few years, makes her time and experience in this district so successful and enjoyable. Mrs. Ahlert continues to have gratitude for all the administrators, colleagues, parents, and students who have made and continue to make this district a truly incredible and unbelievable place to work.
