The holidays are a time to spend with loved ones, including family and friends. During the holiday season, there will be thousands of service members who can’t make it home to be with the ones they love. John F. Kennedy Elementary School students participated in the 100,000 Thank Yous initiative sponsored by Nash FM, the United States Organization (USO), and United Rentals. The project was a part of the school's character education program. Students were challenged to create homemade thank you cards for the troops, which will be sent with the support of the radio station.
On Saturday, November 25th, a combined team of ice hockey players from Wayne Valley and Wayne Hills skated to their first victory with a 10-1 score against West Milford. The idea of forming a combined team started with the realization that it would be difficult for each high school to maintain a team for the 2017-2018 season. The graduation of seniors and a lack of players at the varsity and junior varsity levels would have led to a situation where both high schools would be forced to play younger players not accustomed to playing hockey at the varsity level. Without the co-op option, the future of high school ice hockey in Wayne was in question. The Wayne Township Board of Education passed a resolution to move forward with the application in March of 2017 and it was subsequently approved by the NJSIAA and Big North Conference.
Every year the staff and students of Wayne Valley show their support for those in need by donating blood during their fall and spring blood drives. On November 13th, Wayne Valley High School held their annual fall blood drive. In sum, 50 members of the Wayne Valley school community made viable blood donations. Every donor is a hero! Everyone is encouraged to come out and donate in the spring! WVHS would like to thank their Senior Health Teachers, Lauren Aspiazu and Lauren Fellner for running the blood drives.
After learning about Ancient Egypt in Mrs. Schweighardt's 8th grade Social Studies classes at George Washington Middle School, students used Tinkercad, a 3D CAD program to design a cartouche that spelled out their name in hieroglyphics using MakerBot 3D printers. Students had to use measurement tools to plan out the placement of each hieroglyph and consider the depth of each character to make sure it would be engraved into their print. Trey Lengyl, an 8th grade student, said, “It was a lot of fun. We should 3D print in more classes.” Eighth grade student Zack Sandner said, “There should be a CAD club. This was fun and we could totally get into 3D printing.”
On Thursday, November 16, 2017, Wayne Elementary Media Specialists, Dr. Charlene Mason, Margarita Carruthers, Marissa Halat, Christine Halstater, Colleen Lee, and Linda Mandarino presented at the New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) 2017 Fall Conference. Their presentation was titled, "Nine District Media Specialists Partner to Create Maker Night for Elementary Students". The one hour session covered the organization, promotion, and implementation of a large-group Maker event. The selection of age-appropriate activities for elementary-level maker stations and creation of schedules were examples of topics that were discussed. Hands-on samples were provided. There were approximately 100 attendees for the presentation. The presenters were excited to share their pride and pitfalls of the Maker Event that they conducted in March 2017 for 200 Wayne students and their parents. Their presentation can be found here.
