Special Education Week
May 10th - 16th is Special Education Week in the state of New Jersey. The theme this year is “Creating, Learning, and Growing.” Never has there been a more appropriate time for us to remember how Special Education continues to evolve for our students. Many programs and services that developed over the years were initiated to create new ways for our students to access their education so they could learn and we all could grow. Distance learning is our latest opportunity.

Cristina Powell, English teacher in the special education department at Wayne Hills with her daughter, who is a third grader at Packanack Elementary.

In the early days of distance learning, Ms. Powell quickly learned how to screencast her lesson and recorded herself giving her students lessons. Her students have provided feedback saying that the videos are very helpful to their understanding of the material and they have also helped them to feel connected.

Preschool teacher, Heather Shaw at Ryerson Elementary feels fortunate to work with exceptional paraprofessionals who, like herself, are trying to figure out how to best meet these needs. She is proud to work with these ladies and is highlighting all the great things they have done during this unprecedented time of distance learning.

Together, they have been communicating, sharing ideas, videos, and resources they post on Class Dojo for their students. They held a Preschool Parade, and delivered goodies and supplies to their students (all while following safe social-distancing practices). They decorated their cars and made signs to cheer up our students and their families.

The Preschool Paras join in on every zoom meeting they can to greet students and help support their families during this difficult time. They make weekly videos from their home showing students and parents how to complete a project, singing songs about their weekly themes, and demonstrating fun activities everyone can do at home.

Wayne Township Public Schools Celebrate Ability Awareness in the Month of May!
In support of our inclusive philosophy, the Wayne Township Public Schools celebrates Ability Awareness during the month of May. Ability Awareness is a district-wide initiative that focuses on promoting understanding, acceptance, and appreciation of differences and commonalities among students, staff, and the community. Activities are planned and supported by the Ability Awareness Committee, which is composed of parents, teachers, STARS (Students Teaching And Reaching Students) Coordinators, WSPA/SEPAG members, and administration. Past Ability Awareness activities have included Mix it up Lunches, hosting guest speakers, and training for staff, students, and parents.

Schuyler-Colfax Middle School Staff Donates
Schuyler-Colfax Middle School Staff Donates
The Schuyler Colfax Middle School staff donated $530 to provide snacks to our local healthcare heroes as well as $400 to aid local families in need. A $200 donation was made to the PTO Helping Hands Organization and an additional $200 went to help Schuyler Families. 5 baskets were sent to Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, 1 basket to Care One in Wayne, 1 basket to Care One in Parsippany, $50 donation made to the meal GOFundMe page to Mountainside Hospital, 2 baskets were sent to St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson, 2 baskets were sent to St. Joseph's Hospital in Wayne, 1 basket to Allendale Nursing Home Staff, 1 basket to the Paterson Firefighters and 2 baskets sent to Hackensack Hospital.

600 mask extenders were 3D printed and placed into these baskets for healthcare workers by our Media Specialist, Laura Healy.

Virtual Field Trip with Automotive Technology Teachers
District Automotive Technology Teachers, Steve Hopper and Ken Bergen, this time joined by Wayne Hills AP, Kristy Stofey, filmed another virtual field trip video for their students.
District Automotive Technology Teachers, Steve Hopper and Ken Bergen, this time joined by Wayne Hills AP, Kristy Stofey, filmed another virtual field trip video for their students.
On this trip, they visited the Board of Education Transportation Dept. shop, where district technicians perform repairs on all types of district owned vehicles. Shop Manager, Rich Skibitski, explained how the shop is responsible for not only the school buses, but all the facilities vehicles, trucks, vans, and even small engine equipment.

At the time of the visit, the district's 46 snow blowers were in for their scheduled repairs and maintenance. One of the more amazing statistics revealed during the visit, is that the total number of miles the district's yellow school buses travel in one school year is very close to one million miles! When the other district vehicles are added in, the total tops the one million mile mark. While the shop is still operating during the school shut down, the staff has been put on split shifts, in order to reduce the number of people in the building in order to maintain distancing requirements.

Mrs. Piro's Marketing II classes and NewLogix Apparel partnered up together to offer a limited edition hoodie and crewneck sweatshirt for a Stronger Together fundraiser.
Mrs. Piro's Marketing II classes and NewLogix Apparel partnered up together to offer a limited edition hoodie and crewneck sweatshirt for a Stronger Together fundraiser.
The net proceeds went to the following: 60% was donated to help feed Wayne's emergency responders and frontline healthcare workers and 40% was donated to the Wayne Hills PTO for scholarships for graduating seniors.
