Assad Family Creates Fully Functional Emergency Ventilator from Their Home
Assad Family Creates Fully Functional Emergency Ventilator from Their Home
The Asaad Family has been busy with more than just Distance Learning. They set a goal to design a simple, fully functional and medically sound ventilator for less than $100 to help with the shortage of ventilators since the COVID-19 pandemic has begun. Led by their father, Nart Asaad, who is an engineer, the four boys began working with Lego Mindstorm Smart Bricks and materials they found at home to build their first prototype. Mohammad, (9th grade - Wayne Hills), Baslan (8th Grade - Anthony Wayne), Rayan (5th Grade - JFK), and Adam (Kindergarten - JFK) all worked as a team to conduct research, create software, and build ventilators. By April 15th, the Asaad boys were already on their third functional prototype with sensors working, improved software, and multiple controls.

Just 10 days later, the Asaad Family’s hard work paid off, and they had a fully functional emergency ventilator. Some of the specifications are that it has straightforward code, to increase its reliability, uses inexpensive rechargeable batteries, and allows for complete control over the ventilator’s function with a touch screen. With this design, air temperature, lung pressure, tidal volume, and the inspiration/expiration ratio can all be carefully monitored and controlled. All of this important work did not replace schoolwork. The boys’ mother, Layali, made sure of that!

Homemade Face Shields by Randall Carter Student
Sarah made homemade face shields for the nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson to utilize. Sarah's mom works there and shared pictures of herself and other staff members using the shields. Sarah is a role model at Randall Carter. She is a kind, hardworking, supportive first grade student that works hard each day to make everyone feel cared for and included. In addition, she is an incredible student with a joy that fills up her entire classroom.

Automotive Repair Shop with Mr. Bergen and Mr. Hopper
Automotive Repair Shop with Mr. Bergen and Mr. Hopper
District Automotive Instructors, Ken Bergen and Steve Hopper spent a morning recently at Van's Auto Repair in Butler, making a video to share with their students about what a workday in an automotive repair shop looks like during the Covid-19 crisis.
District Automotive Instructors, Ken Bergen and Steve Hopper spent a morning recently at Van's Auto Repair in Butler, making a video to share with their students about what a workday in an automotive repair shop looks like during the Covid-19 crisis.
While wearing masks and observing social distancing, the instructors worked with Van's personnel performing an oil change and tire rotation, as well as providing the students with a virtual tour of the shop highlighting some vehicles and explaining what some of the specialized shop equipment is used for. Van's owner, Sean Vos, also explained the sanitizing steps and additional safety required when servicing vehicles now to ensure that all stay safe. Mr. Bergen and Mr. Hopper extends thanks to owner of Van's Auto Repair, Sean.
