Holiday Cards for the Military
Students in Mrs. Cornell's classes at Wayne Hills High School created 350 holiday cards for deployed soldiers. This is their second year participating as part of #MISSIONHOLIDAYCARDS, allowing students the opportunity to share their thanks and best wishes in each and every card. Students created cards in celebration of all holidays celebrated at this time of the year with graphics and sayings thanking our service men and women, wishing them a safe and quick return home, and hopefully putting a smile on the faces of those who receive them.

These cards will be sent to the active military via a program called “Heartillery Group.” Thanks to district employee, Lisa Acampora and her connections to this organization, the cards will be forwarded to the troops this holiday season.

Lafayette Elementary School’s Character Trait of the Month for November was Generosity. Teachers organized multiple events throughout the month to teach students about the impact of generosity, no matter how great or small.

Peer Assistance Leaders, under the direction of Ms. Smith, spearheaded a collection for NorthStar Pet Rescue, a volunteer organization that saves dogs from shelters and unsafe conditions. Foster families take care of the animals until they are able to find their forever home. Lafayette was able to collect leashes, collars, toys, blankets, and beds to make their transition to New Jersey a little easier.

Kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Agrati and Mrs. Roche, organized a winter service project inspired by “The Mitten Tree” by Candace Christiansen. Students, staff, and community members donated hats, gloves, scarves, and mittens that were donated to young children who are less fortunate.

The Schuyler-Colfax Student Council and Service Club teamed up to run their annual holiday Toys for Tots drive.
The Schuyler-Colfax Student Council and Service Club teamed up to run their annual holiday Toys for Tots drive.
Toys for Tots is a program run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve which distributes toys to less fortunate children during the holiday season. This year, the Schuyler community raised nearly 300 toys for donation.

The Pines Lake staff has been learning about restorative justice and implementing practices to build a culture of care. Classrooms are spaces for all participants to establish these cultures of care by recognizing the need for healthy relationships and reflective practices. Community circles are one practice that help students and staff work towards developing a stronger school community.

The Paterson YMCA had a Thanksgiving feast for those in need. Wayne Hills High School teachers, Mrs. Kindler, Mrs. Glenn, and Ms. Getzke's transition classes each prepared a tray of food for the temporary residents of the Paterson YMCA.
