The Wayne Township Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Mrs. Heather Weinstein as Principal of Schuyler Colfax Middle School. She assumed her position on December 4.
The Wayne Township Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Mrs. Heather Weinstein as Principal of Schuyler Colfax Middle School. She assumed her position on December 4.
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mark Toback, noted, “Heather is a long-time member and valued member of the Wayne school community and it was no surprise when she emerged as our top candidate for this position. Heather has impressive professional qualifications and experiences with a long history of success in private and public enterprise.” Mrs. Weinstein started her career in sales and management after graduating Rutgers University with a Bachelors in English Literature and a concentration in business and textile design. After 10 years in private industry, Mrs. Weinstein returned to school at New Jersey City University to obtain a Masters in Teaching before beginning her educational career in Wayne just over 16 years ago as a third grade teacher at Pines Lake Elementary School.

Anthony Wayne Middle School's Student Council is once again partnering with the Paterson Fire Department to provide toys for the upcoming holiday season to children in need in neighboring Paterson, NJ. All students and school community members are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys through December 18th. We are off to a great start at AWMS!

Schuyler Colfax Middle School Uses Swivls
Students are excited about the new Swivl robots being used at Schuyler Colfax. Swivl is a robotic mount for an iPad, camera, or smartphone. It is designed to track the teacher in the classroom allowing them to freely move around while teaching. It also provides a 360 degree perspective of the classroom to our virtual learners.

Currently, 3 teachers are piloting this new digital tool at SCMS. Seen in the photograph is Mrs. Duin, our STEM teacher. Mrs. Burton and Mrs. Massola are also piloting the devices.

Ryerson Elementary School's Leader in Me Program
Ryerson Elementary School is in their 3rd year of implementing the Leader in Me program (Franklin Covey) that encourages students to incorporate the 7 Habits into their daily living both in school and at home. Leader in Me is a whole school improvement model that uses teaching practices to promote social & emotional learning for all of our students in grades K-5, and our goal for 20/21 is to reach “every student, every day” by having them either attend virtually or in-person, and be engaged in school.

Global Read Aloud Project at Schuyler Colfax
Mrs. Burton and Mrs. Bruce's ELA classes participated in "The Global Read Aloud", an international movement to motivate teachers and students to read the same book and connect about a text. The project ran from Oct. 5th through Nov. 22nd. During that time, teachers read aloud the book, Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park, and connected with classes internationally to discuss and analyze the book.

As part of their final project, the students created Racism and Inequality Quilts on Google Slides to share their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about racism and inequality in the world today. This topic is prevalent throughout the novel, Prairie Lotus, as the main character, Hanna faces discrimination and racism for being Chinese American in the 1880s. Her plight helped shine a light on a societal problem that still exists today.
