The Board approved the establishment of virtual instruction after holiday breaks to limit the potential spread of COVID within our schools. In Wayne, we have seen a significant increase in the number of students and staff members who have tested positive or are under quarantine. Many public health officials have warned about the potential spread of COVID during these time periods.

The original PHASE II PLAN also included a plan to eliminate Virtual/Wellness Wednesdays. The Board of Education approved a revision pushing back this action (eliminate Virtual/Wellness Wednesdays) with additional discussion planned in January.

Finally, the original PHASE II PLAN included a plan to merge high school cohorts from three cohorts to two cohorts. The Board of Education approved a revision pushing back the merging of cohorts until January 19th. High school students will return on January 19th with the three cohorts merged into two.

Every effort is being made to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, and the greater community. Our hope is that by taking proactive measures now and by revising the original PHASE II PLAN, we will be better able to preserve in-person instructional opportunities. Keeping our schools open for in-person instruction is not possible without help from the entire community. Please continue to fill out the daily health screening accurately and please keep your child home if sick or experiencing symptoms. If in doubt, or if you are concerned about possible exposure, please take the most cautious approach and contact your building principal or school nurse in advance of sending your child to school.

The Wayne Board of Education supported a RESOLUTION AGAINST RACISM and further asserted that our school community shares a collective responsibility to reject all forms of individual and systemic racism as destructive to our educational mission, values, and goals. This was an incredibly important first step and the Board followed up their June resolution with the approval of a specific goal focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Each year, on Veterans' Day, Schuyler-Colfax Middle School honors Veteran relatives of students, teachers and staff members. This year, they wanted to provide a virtual tribute in honor of all of their veterans as well as those that are currently serving in the armed forces.

SCMS band directors, Mr. Puzak and Mr. Vogel, organized the playing of the national anthem and the march of the armed forces. Teachers and staff reached out to the school community to see if they would like a living or deceased veteran from their family recognized in the tribute.

Every Wednesday, all across the district, students participate in Wellness Wednesdays. Everyone has the opportunity to participate in hands on activities that are peaceful and calming.

This past week students learned how to draw "Underwater Zentangles" inspired by underwater creatures. First, they watched a video introducing Underwater Zentangles. Then, they watched a tutorial on how to draw them. Soothing music was available to listen to as they drew peacefully. The activity was a collaborative effort by our district's Elementary Art Teachers and Art Teacher, Marybeth Kopacz.

JFK Elementary Earns Recognition for New Jersey Safe Routes to School
JFK Elementary School was awarded a Bronze Level Recognition for New Jersey Safe Routes to School for the 2020 - 2022 school years. They were chosen for honoring the commitment and support of the program by encouraging children to safely walk and bicycle to school.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation partnered with TransOptions, Inc., to administer a statewide education and encouragement program. TransOptions advocates for and implements programs that make walking and bicycling around our neighborhoods and schools fun, easy, safe and healthy for all students and families. The Safe Routes to School initiative that JFK participates in, helps ease traffic jams and air pollution, reduce our reliance on cars, unite neighborhoods and contribute to students' readiness to learn in school.
