Chief Joseph Visits Wayne Valley High School
On Friday, October 18th, Wayne Valley's "We Act Club" had Maasai Chief Joseph from Kenya visit with his companion John. They spoke to high school students about what life and culture is like within their village. Students were able to participate in activities such as dressing up in Maasai clothing and dancing to Maasai folk songs. Both students and staff members helped raise funds for Chief Joseph's Operation Safe Home initiative, a project Chief Joseph started to help children and young girls escape human trafficking. The We Act Club also donated to their Clean Water Fund to help the tribe finish a well project to supply clean water for a Maasai village.

Theunis Dey Swears In 2019-20 Student Council
On Friday, October 18th, Theunis Dey Elementary School held its annual Student Council swearing-in ceremony. 14 students, two from each fourth and fifth grade classes, were sworn in as this year's Student Council. These students will serve the school in various ways - leading our morning announcements, serving as monitors for their Morning Reading Time, and assisting their secretary and nurse, among other duties, throughout the year. Congratulations to the new representatives! Go, Tornadoes!

Peace Out Day and Mix it Up Recess
Packanack Elementary School celebrated Violence and Vandalism Prevention Week by participating in Peace Out Day and a Mix it Up Recess. Students wore tie dye and peace signs to spread the message of peace and empathy. They also mixed it up at recess playing different games with their peers during recess.

AWMS Celebrates Red Ribbon Week
Anthony Wayne Middle School celebrated Red Ribbon Week, which promotes anti drug and alcohol abuse. They had fun theme days like "Lei Off Drugs" (Hawaiian Day), "Drugs Are Old School" (Decades Day), "Wake Up Drug Free" (PJ Day) and the annual "PINK OUT" day. Student and staff participated and took part in morning public service announcements with important information and statistics about adolescent drug and alcohol abuse. The week was filled with learning and school spirit!

Life's lessons are best learned through experience. Unfortunately, when the target audience includes teens, and the topic is drug and alcohol abuse, experience is not the teacher of choice. On Wednesday, October 30th George Washington Middle School participated in the “Every 15 Minutes” event to wrap up Red Ribbon Week.

On Wednesday, October 30th George Washington Middle School participated in the “Every 15 Minutes” event to wrap up Red Ribbon Week.
“Every 15 Minutes” offers real-life experience without the real-life risks. This program is designed to instill teenagers with an understanding of the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. This powerful program challenged students to think about drinking and using drugs, personal safety, and the responsibility of making mature decisions.

During this event, one student was removed from class every 15 minutes. A few minutes later, the student returned to class as a representation of a life lost due to drug and/or alcohol abuse, complete with white face make-up and a black "Every 15 Minutes" T-shirt. Once these students returned to class, they did not interact with other students for the remainder of the school day. GWMS believes that this is a powerful message to help students stay drug free!
