The Wayne Board of Education supported a RESOLUTION AGAINST RACISM and further asserted that our school community shares a collective responsibility to reject all forms of individual and systemic racism as destructive to our educational mission, values, and goals. This was an incredibly important first step and the Board followed up their June resolution with the approval of a specific goal focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The District is considering merging our high school cohorts from three cohorts to two cohorts. In preparation, a survey is being shared to collect information about how this action might impact scheduling and class size. The safety of our students and staff is our first priority. In order to safely merge cohorts, we need accurate numbers to determine if merging will allow us to maintain social distancing in our classrooms and on buses.

As we look forward to seeing our students return for in-person instruction on Monday, I am writing to ask for your help with two issues.
As we look forward to seeing our students return for in-person instruction on Monday, I am writing to ask for your help with two issues.
While our parent community has been very good when it comes to completing the DAILY HEALTH SCREENING, we have experienced a decline in the past few weeks. We are doing everything we can to protect in-person instructional time, but we need your help with the screening.
While our parent community has been very good when it comes to completing the DAILY HEALTH SCREENING, we have experienced a decline in the past few weeks. We are doing everything we can to protect in-person instructional time, but we need your help with the screening.
Please be sure to complete the screening every day your child will be attending in-person and please do so well in advance of their arrival at school. Having to keep students from their classes until a parent can be contacted and until the screening is complete is becoming a far too common but necessary action to protect staff and student health.

Finally, we all know that increasing the amount of fresh air in any indoor space is one way we can combat the virus. Our teachers will keep their windows open and may take students outside whenever possible. In addition, bus drivers seek to keep their windows open when possible. We ask that you please have your child dressed for warmth recognizing that windows will be open at a time when they would normally be closed.

Wayne Valley Marching Band Wins State and Regional Championships
Wayne Valley Marching Band Wins State and Regional Championships
On Saturday, October 31st, the Wayne Valley Marching Band was crowned USBands Division I New Jersey State Champions. USBands was the only circuit in the nation to provide an online competitive setting, and as a result, brought in over 200 bands from around the country. Starting in mid-September, a weekly recording of the band’s performance was submitted for adjudication by 3-5 judges in the categories of Music, Visual, Overall Effect, Percussion, and Guard. During the regular season, the band earned five 1st place finishes (never losing to a band from New Jersey) and 15 different awards for Best Music, Visual, Overall Effect, Colorguard, and Percussion.

SCMS Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, the American Library Association awards the Pura Belpre Award to the author and illustrator that best celebrates Latino culture. Pura Belpre was the first Afro-Latina librarian in New York City to create a Spanish language children's book published by a major book company in 1930.

As a a part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Mrs. Tucker and Mr. Callahan's 8th grade social studies classes chose a notable Hispanic American to research from the book Nuestra America. Belpre is among 30 Latinas and Latinos profiled in the new book. As a culmination to the project, slides were shared in class to celebrate the contributions Latinos have made in the United States.

Wayne Hills Structured Learning Students on the Public Relations Committee recognized coaches for Coaches Appreciation Day on November 4, 2020.

Students created a bulletin board representing all sports teams and the WHHS teachers/staff who are coaches. Coaches also received a poem, a treat, and some thank you letters in their mailboxes.

APT Bitmoji Challenge Fundraiser
Ms. Zygmunt, Mr. Fauerbach, and the APT PTO are challenging our school community to match our staff members with their Bitmojis to raise money for our families in need for Thanksgiving. Students, parents and staff members can participate by donating $1 per entry. The winner who gets the most answers correct, will win the chance to be Principal for a Day and a starring spot in Mr. Grimshaw's Bitmoji Office performing a read aloud of their favorite book and snack with Mr. Grimshaw! As a bonus, the grade level with the most correct entries can win a special activity!

Red Ribbon Week at AWMS!
Anthony Wayne Middle School took part in Red Ribbon Week with a number of activities. Each morning a public service announcement took place regarding the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. In addition, spirit days allowed in person and virtual students to show their school spirit with themes associated with Red Ribbon Week. A two part virtual assembly with Youth Motivational Speaker, David Flood also took place. His message of dignity and respect combined with an anti-drug and alcohol abuse emphasis resonated with our students and staff members. Finally, Wellness Wednesday included a school-wide guidance counselor lesson tied to 'No Place for Hate' and the district goal on diversity, equity and inclusion. It was a great week at AW demonstrating a strong school community while taking part in hybrid learning!

GWMS 7th Grade Mars Lander Project
GWMS 7th Grade Mars Lander Project
Students in Mrs. Pagano's Seventh Grade Science Class designed and tested Mars Landers as the culminating STEM project for their study of Mars. Students were tasked to take on the role of a member of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to design a lander that would keep their "Eggstronaut" safe upon landing on Mars. Each student's lander was tested according to the same strict criteria and they were evaluated to see if the "egg" in their lander remained unharmed from a drop of 9 feet into a 1-meter wide area. Students were given materials and each item they used had a cost. Their goal was to be as cost-effective as possible while also keeping in mind the safety of the passenger onboard the Lander they created. Both virtual and in-person students were able to test their Landers. Watch the videos below to see what happened!
