I am writing to call your attention to two features that are unique in our school calendar. These details appear in the fine print of the calendar and I suspect that many may not be aware.

As a result of an effort to address concerns about the school year ending in late June, the district was able to save a day at the end of the year by making the Friday (February 14th) before President’s weekend a minimal day. Prior to the 18/19 calendar, school was always closed on the Friday before Presidents’ Day. In addition, there is a stipulation that if there were two or more emergency days used by February 1st, schools would be open for a full day on Monday, February 17th, which is Presidents’ Day.

Elementary ESL Field Trip to Liberty Science Center
Elementary ESL Field Trip to Liberty Science Center
On January 9th, Elementary ESL (English-as-a-Second Language) students from across the district took a trip to the Liberty Science Center. They were able to explore the facility and participate in hands-on experiences to learn more about the world around them. Students from APT, Ryerson, JFK, and Pines Lake used this as an opportunity to develop their language skills and deepen their conceptual understanding. Thank you Mrs. Pignataro, for organizing the trip!

Wayne Valley High School Students Selected for New Jersey Honors Ensembles
The Wayne Valley Band program is proud of the 12 students who auditioned and were selected to perform with the North Jersey Area Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble, New Jersey Region 1 Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble, and the New Jersey All-State Symphonic Band.
The Wayne Valley Band program is proud of the 12 students who auditioned and were selected to perform with the North Jersey Area Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble, New Jersey Region 1 Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble, and the New Jersey All-State Symphonic Band.
Each participant was assessed on their technical and musical fluency in an arduous audition process over the span of two months. These students competed with over 1,100 students and were considered among the best musicians in New Jersey. Upon acceptance, the selected students have the pleasure of performing under the batons of decorated New Jersey high school Band Directors, along with esteemed collegiate directors Mr. Darryl Bott (Rutgers University), Mr. Jeffrey Grogan (Oklahoma City University), and Dr. Cynthia Johnston Turner (University of Georgia).

Randall Carter Elementary School's Student Council hosted a video chat with students at a partner school in Uganda on January 28th.

Randall Carter's Student Council formed a relationship with the non-profit, Heart for People, and this will be their second year of fundraising. Heart for People helps educate students about poverty and the struggle many children face with receiving a basic education. Interest in this partnership was born out of Randall Carter's goal to raise global awareness in their students, to utilize 21st century technology to facilitate hands-on learning experiences, and change perspectives.

Interest in this partnership was born out of Randall Carter's goal to raise global awareness in their students, to utilize 21st century technology to facilitate hands-on learning experiences, and change perspectives.
Randall Carter students are currently working to raise funds to build a new school for nearly 315 Sudanese students in need. Many of the students have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS in Sudan. It was an unforgettable learning experience for everyone.

Girl Scout Cadets Present Media Specialists with a Special Gift
On January 20th six Girl Scouts joined the elementary media specialists to share their ‘MEdia Journey’ experience. As part of the Take Action portion of the program, the girls were expected to identify a need in the community, address the need, and talk about what they learned. The cadets found that there were not enough books in town and school libraries that represent girls in non-traditional roles and endeavors. They noted how the public narrative is changing by recognizing strong women, but felt the book offerings in the school libraries didn’t necessarily keep pace. The girls shared the details of their journeys and presented each media specialist with a copy of the book, "Strong is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves" by Kate T. Parker for each of the 9 elementary schools' media centers.

The Albert P. Terhune student council members along with Ms. Cahill and Ms. Duhaime planned and organized a school wide food drive. They decided to make it a grade-level competition to encourage all students to participate. The student council members created informational posters which were displayed around the school. They also visited the classrooms to explain the initiative. The food drive was very successful and food was donated to a local food pantry.

On January 13th, WVHS Junior, Alex Rech won the Wayne Valley Poetry Out Loud Competition. Alex will represent Wayne Valley at the Region 6 recitation contest on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at Bergen Community College, competing against students from Passaic, Bergen and Hudson counties.

Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest called Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. The program encourages students to learn about great poetry through recitation and helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3 million students and 50,000 teachers from 10,000 schools in every state, Washington, DC, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. This year, Wayne Valley High School participated in a school wide contest which included over 350 students.
