On January 23, 2020, the Wayne Board of Education called on citizens to continue working together to advance the education of all students, as it recognized the contributions of colleagues throughout the state during School Board Recognition Month in New Jersey.

“The Wayne Board of Education embraces the goal of high-quality education for all New Jersey public school students,” read a resolution adopted by the board. “New Jersey can take pride in its schools, which rank among the nation’s best in key achievement indicators such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress scores, and the preparation for college through advanced placement offerings and SAT assessments.” Click here for full press release.

Class III Officers
Two Additional Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers were approved at the January 23rd meeting of the Board of Education. These officers will serve at the elementary schools on a rotating basis beginning in February 2020.
Two Additional Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers were approved at the January 23rd meeting of the Board of Education. These officers will serve at the elementary schools on a rotating basis beginning in February 2020.
Superintendent, Dr. Mark Toback, commented, “We are thrilled that Class III Law Enforcement Officers Brent Cannon and John Costabile will be assigned to our elementary schools. Our newest Class III officers are retired from the Wayne Police Department, and each has a long and distinguished record of service to this community. The addition of Class III officers at each of our middle schools is widely recognized as a great boost to our safety and security initiatives. We look forward to seeing a similar benefit at each of our elementary schools.”

On Thursday, January 23, 2020, John Maso, Director of Facilities, gave a talk to the Girl Scout Troop at A. P. Terhune School on the subject of Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency. He explained the basic differences between Energy Conservation – adjusting your habits to use less energy, and Energy Efficiency – using new technology with items that use less energy. They had an interactive worksheet in which they listed and drew ways in which they could conserve energy; and items they knew about in their homes, schools and community which reduce energy use.

Energy Conservation involves using less energy by adjusting your behaviors and habits, such as turning off the light when you leave a room, turning off or unplugging appliances when not in use, and walking or riding a bicycle instead of driving - are all examples of energy conservation. The two main reasons people conserve energy are to gain more control over their energy bill (save money) and to reduce the demand on the earth’s natural resources.

On Tuesday, January 14th, Ryerson Elementary School had a kick off assembly for their "One Book, One Ryerson" journey. The entire school community (every student, teacher, paraprofessional, administrator, nurse, custodian, and lunch aide) will once again read the same book. Wayne Township's Librarian, Linda Lawrence, will also participate in the reading, making it a true community event.
On Tuesday, January 14th, Ryerson Elementary School had a kick off assembly for their "One Book, One Ryerson" journey. This year’s selection was "The World According to Humphrey", by Betty Birney. Students spent the previous week at school studying clues to help try and guess the book before the big reveal on Tuesday. During the assembly, students reviewed the clues and watched a short video showing Humphrey the hamster in some of his adventures. School Counselor Crystal Olson acted out a scene from the book as well.
