What's Needed For SOL Testing:


  • Student MUST have an active TestNav App on that school-issued Chromebook (school has installed it).

MONTHLY (EVERY MONTH) - CHECK to see if the TestNav App is working properly. It can be clicked and used for practice tests. Staying on the app for any test for any extended time is not necessary, but can be done.

When to Get Help:

  • Fall Testing - Contact Mr. Ford with Chromebook/TestNav concerns in AUGUST, SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER, or EARLY NOVEMBER

  • Spring Testing - Contact Mr. Ford with Chromebook/TestNav concerns in JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH, or EARLY APRIL

SOL Testing Requirements


All Virginia public school students must take and pass five (5) specific SOL tests as part of high school graduation requirements. High school SOL tests are NOT optional.

SOL Tests NEEDED for graduation (Take and PASS):

READING (ONLY ONE [1]) - typically taken when in English 11

*WRITING (portfolio of specific class-assigned writings from English 9 [persuasive], English 10 [analytical], and English 11 [argumentative])

*NOTE: WHS does NOT participate in the linked SOL Practice Writing test. Again, students create a portfolio of writings throughout high school. Each year's SOL writing assignment is extremely important.

MATH* (ONLY ONE [1]) - can be...

  • Algebra I or

  • Geometry or

  • Algebra II

*NOTE: All students must take a math SOL test at the high school level, even if one was already passed at the middle school level.

HISTORY (ONLY ONE [1]) - can be...

  • World Geography or,

  • World History I (World History and Geography to 1500 A.D.) or,

  • World History II (World History and Geography: 1500 A.D. to the Present) or,

  • US History (Virginia and United States History)

SCIENCE (ONLY ONE [1]) - can be...

  • Biology* or

*The Biology SOL must be taken as the high school level, regardless of other science SOL tests that may have already been passed.

  • Earth Science, or

  • Chemistry


SOL Tests must be taken in person, AT SCHOOL. The Virginia Department of Education does not offer any other options.


Students MUST USE THEIR SCHOOL-ISSUED CHROMEBOOKS for SOL TESTING. Please see the details under the Drop-Down Menu "SOL Computers (School-Issued Student Chromebooks)".

SOL Practice:

  • Practice tests can be taken on the school-issued Chromebook as described under that specific Drop-Down Menu above, "SOL Computers (School-Issued Student Chromebooks)".

  • Practice tests can also be accessed on the Virginia Department of Education website (click the "SOL Practice" Button at top of this page).


All SOL testing starts at the beginning of the school day at 8:30am.

ONLY Students Taking an SOL test on each day will come to school in the morning for testing (8:30am). Classes for all students will be held everyday AFTER SOL testing (11:00am). No SOL Test = Do NOT come to school until 11:00am.

REMINDERS: SOL testing starts at 8:30am. Please be on time. Please have your fully charged School-Issued Chromebook.

Classes start at 11:00am. If you do not have an SOL test on any particular day, do not come to school until 11:00am on that day.

AP Testing

AP Exams are optional, but if you are taking the class, why not take the AP Exam? It is very good college prep.

AP Exam Cost (2021-2022):

  • Full Price - $96 per AP Exam

1 AP Exam = $96

2 AP Exams = $192

3 AP Exams = $288

4 AP Exams = $384

5 AP Exams = $480

  • Reduced Price

    • Some information on reduced fees can be found on this link: 2022 AP Exam Fee Reduction. Our school is participating in Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) this year. After reaching this site, click on "Primary Criteria for Schools/Districts Participating in Community Eligibility". You may also want to look at "Alternative Criteria for All Schools/Districts".

    • Contact Mrs. Butler (information above) if you (student)/your child MIGHT qualify for a reduced AP Exam Fee (including Valley Scholars students). Please try to make this contact before the month of October is over.

    • After contact with Mrs. Butler, Valley Scholars students must reach out to their JMU contact person for support from that program.


  • NOVEMBER 8, 2021


      • Students MUST enter their Join Codes into their College Board accounts so that their AP Exams are included in WHS's order.

      • Join Codes are provided by the student's teacher or the School Test Coordinator (Virtual Virginia, Homeschool, and Independent Students).

    • The College Board sets a Fall 2021 date for AP Exam Orders to be submitted. For this reason, students must pay for each intended AP Exam by our NOVEMBER 8, 2021 due date.

      • PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED from Tuesday, October 19 through Monday, November 8, 2021.

      • Payments will be made to WHS (CASH or CHECK) and given to our bookkeeper, Ms. Furze, who is housed in the administrators' (principals') office area. The option of paying with a credit card is not quite ready yet for this purpose. It MIGHT become available in time for AP Exam payments. Information on this will be updated if it becomes available in time.


  • LATE FEE - $40 per AP Exam

    • This fee applies to EVERY AP Exam ordered between the end of the school day on November 15, 2021 and the end of the school day on March 15, 2022.

  • CANCELATION FEE - $40 per AP Exam

    • This fee applies to EVERY cancelled AP Exam after the order has been made at the end of the school day on November 15, 2021.

WorkKeys (a mandatory option for some)


  • WorkKeys are substitute tests for some students who may need other options. We only offer WorkKeys in Reading and Writing. Students CANNOT CHOOSE WorkKeys. If necessary, WorkKeys will be assigned by the School Test Coordinator or a WHS administrator.

What You Need:

Students MUST USE their SCHOOL-ISSUED CHROMEBOOKS for WorkKeys testing, just as with all SOL tests.
