At Watauga Humane Society, the pets are well taken care of. However, the environment of a shelter cannot compare to a loving home, where cats can thrive and grow free of the crowding and noise of an animal shelter.
Adoption and fostering can even be lifesaving. Watauga Humane Society is committed to keeping its euthanasia rate below 5%. However, many shelters do not have this luxury.
A significant amount of shelters throughout the country, taking in large amounts of animals and receiving little funding, are forced to euthanize animals after a period of time to make room for new ones to enter the shelter. As a result, over 378,000 shelter animals were euthanized in 2022, an increase of 2% from the previous year, with numbers continuing to climb in the years to follow.
By adopting or fostering animals, you save their lives and free up space for shelters to take in more animals.
