Groups
During enrollment students are placed in one of the following groups- based on age, credits needed and behavior
Alpha Jays
In school Monday thru Thursday
Pass 7 out of 7 classes
Need to have 5 absences or less each hex (7 hours each)
Work experience, can leave early (doesn’t count against your attendance)
Must display positive behavior/attitude
Open lunch from 11:25-11:55 (may leave campus) if late, no longer allowed
Is able to earn IS credit
Can be a TA (teacher’s assistant)
Part of the Student Advisory Committee and gives feedback to staff
Can work in hallway after teacher instruction
1st dibs on field trips and fee is waved
No required Friday symposiums
Free access to cell phones during day
Beta Jays
16+ years old
Start here when enroll or beginning of year
In school Monday - Friday
Need to have 7 absences or less
Need to pass 5 out of 7 classes
Can do Work experience, but not allowed to leave early
Can work in the hallway w/ teacher permission only
2nd dibs on field trips
1 symposiums per hex required
Free access to cell phones during day
Gamma Jays
15+ years old, all 9th graders
In school Monday- Friday
Passing fewer than 5 out of 7 classes
If you have more than 7 absences
Must sit in class, only under certain circumstances allowed to work in the hallway
Must have teacher/admin permission to go on field trips

No cell phones during class

Where are we located? We are on the 3rd floor in the Central Building in Waseca. We have our own door marked with ALC- door 11. Students are only allowed to use this door and go up the stairs right inside the door. 14 2nd Ave NE is our physical address. 501 E Elm Ave is our mailing address.
Can I still go to the High School’s after school events as a student? Yes
Am I allowed to still participate in music or athletics? Yes
How does transportation to and from the ALC work? If you attend a school in another district you need to contact your building principal and your bus company to line up transportation. If you receive special education services we set transportation up for you.
How many students typically attend the ALC? Between 65-80
How big are class sizes? Between 15-20
Can I walk in WJSH graduation? Yes, please let us know if you are interested and we let the HS know
Does the diploma look different than the one at the HS? Know it is exactly the same
Do you provide chromebooks and hotspots? Yes once enrolled you will get your chromebook on the first day of class. If you need a hotspot please request one from the office.
Why would a student want to transfer to the ALC? If you are behind in credits, if you are a parent or if you have to work and need an altered schedule. See the eligibility requirements below
How do I request to attend the ALC? Please visit with your school guidance counselor, your parents and fill out our intake form for our waitlist. When a spot opens up you will be contacted to meet with our coordinator to begin enrollment.
Info on Fridays- from 8:10-11:30 this time is used to connect with your teachers, get help and make up any missing work. If you have no missing work you are not required to come. In the afternoon we offer symposiums where different activities or events are offered. Your age and group determine if and how often you need to attend these.
Eligibility Requirements
performs substantially below the performance level for pupils of the same age in a locally determined achievement test;
is behind in satisfactorily completing coursework or obtaining credits for graduation
is pregnant or is a parent
has been assessed as having substance use disorder
has been excluded or expelled according to sections 121A.40 to 121A.56
has been referred by a school district for enrollment in an eligible program or a program pursuant to section
is a victim of physical or sexual abuse
has experienced mental health problems
has experienced homelessness sometime within six months before requesting a transfer to an eligible program
speaks English as a second language or is an English learner
has withdrawn from school or has been chronically truant
is being treated in a hospital in the seven-county metropolitan area for cancer or other life threatening illness or is the sibling of an eligible pupil who is being currently treated, and resides with the pupil's family at least 60 miles beyond the outside boundary of the seven-county metropolitan area
A pupil otherwise qualifying under paragraph (a) who is at least 21 years of age and not yet 22 years of age, and is an English learner with an interrupted formal education according to section 124D.59, subdivision 2a, is eligible to participate in the graduation incentives program under section 124D.68 and in concurrent enrollment courses offered under section 124D.09, subdivision 10, and is funded in the same manner as other pupils under this section.
