Band

7th Grade Band

This ensemble forms the foundation of the Greenwood-Drakes Creek Band program.   Emphasis is on attention to detail, building appropriate practice habits, and tone development.  The band plays music of a grade .5-1.5 level (out of 6), though more advanced selections are possible based on ensemble ability.  The Seventh Grade Band performs at the Winter Concert, Area Concert, and Spring Concert.  Students can begin on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.  Be aware, some instruments have limited enrollment to ensure good ensemble balance and a positive experience for everyone.  Additional color instruments such as oboe, bassoon, french horn, euphonium, and tuba are added as students demonstrate proficiency and desire.  

8th Grade Band

The 8th Grade Concert Band is the advanced band at Drakes Creek Middle School.  Admission is contingent on successful completion of the 7th Grade Band and/or permission of the instructor, although extremely talented seventh grade students may be placed in this ensemble as needed.  Emphasis is on technique and tone development, and special emphasis is placed on ensemble listening and musicianship throughout the year.  The band plays music of a grade 2-3 level (out of 6), although more advanced literature can be played based on the abilities of the group.  Some students in the 8th Grade Band join the High School Marching Band as full fledged members.   The 8th Grade Concert Band performs at the Winter Concert, Area Concert, and Spring Concert, as well as at the KMEA District Festival in the Spring. 

Jazz Band

This Ensemble is  an enrichment class offered at Drakes Creek during SWAMP (the school wide enrichment period) in addition to the regular concert band classes.  Students study different musical styles such as Rock, Jazz, Swing, and Latin.  Additionally , students have the opportunity to study how music is put together to provide a deeper understanding of the art.  Students who play any of the concert band instruments plus (advanced) guitar are welcome to join.  To be eligible students should be part of the regular band classes or have special permission of the director.  If you have questions, contact Mr. Finkbine.

Choir

Mixed Choir

This is semester long choir (August-December and January-May) that meets everyday during the SWAMP time at DCMS.  This choir is made up of soprano, alto, and baritones, singing lots of three-part music.  This choir presents a concert in conjunction with the band/strings every December and May.  The mixed choir also provides opportunities to audition for various all state choirs, honor choirs, and all district choirs, as well as perform in the community and at the choir festival held at WKU in the spring.  

Treble Choir

This is a year long choir made up of soprano and alto girls and meets during a regular class period every day at DCMS.  Each year, this choir presents a concert in conjunction with the band/strings in December and May.  The treble choir members can also audition for all state choir, honor choirs, and have various opportunities to perform at different school functions.  In addition, treble choir members also tour to elementary schools to perform, to WKU choir festival, and perform throughout the community.

String Orchestra

7th Grade String Orchestra

This ensemble forms the foundation of the Greenwood-Drakes Creek String Orchestra program.   Emphasis is on attention to detail, building appropriate practice habits, and tone development. .  The Seventh Grade Orchestra performs at the Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and End of Year Concert.  Students can learn violin, viola, cello, or double bass. 

8th Grade String Orchestra

The 8th Grade Orchestra is the advanced string ensemble at Drakes Creek Middle School.  Admission is contingent on successful completion of the 7th Grade String Orchestra and/or permission of the instructor, although extremely talented seventh grade students may be placed in this ensemble as needed.  Emphasis is on technique and tone development, and special emphasis is placed on ensemble listening and musicianship throughout the year. .  The Seventh Grade Orchestra performs at the Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and End of Year Concert.

Guitar

Beginning Guitar

This is a year long class that teaches you how to play guitar. It is for beginners who have never, ever picked up a guitar!  You will learn how to play reading music, play by ear, and play using chords and chord charts.  Students are allowed to bring their own guitar to class, but guitars are also provided by the school.  There is NO COST for this class, and you can come and have fun learning a new instrument!  

Students who have already play guitar should contact Mrs. Fields for further options.  Seats are limited in Guitar Class.
