Heaven People

By Katie Hurwitz

dear heaven people

—Whispered Johnny, One Night, On The Side Of His Bed—

could you do me a favor

when i’m with you

you know

up there

i want to have a transcript of my thoughts

there must be secretary angels up in heaven

it would be neat

i’m guessing

to read my thoughts in a book

maybe even a mix of other folk’s thoughts

when they go through my mind as i’m listening

you know i do listen sometimes

heaven people

maybe even make movies

i like movies

movies with my dreams

you know i always forget them

maybe nightmares could be epic horror movies

maybe they wouldn’t be so scary

or in those sweet dreams where sage and i walk in the park

you could finish them for me

usually i wake up before they even end

i want to see what happens

just don’t make it a rom com like my sisters watch

heaven people

did you know i like math

oh yes i love numbers

maybe you could write out some stats

how many people have heard my name

how many people met me

how many people loved me

heaven people

i want to read all the books

watch all the movies

look at all the numbers

because you know

i don’t know

i don’t know what’s going on

today or yesterday or last night

but maybe when i’m with you heaven people

i’ll know all about myself

kind of like god
