The Wheelchair Foundation visited our WCI school in early March. On specific days, you could sign up to use a wheelchair for half of the school day
(approx. 3-4 periods).
We interviewed some people on Tuesday, March 6 who were using the wheelchairs.
Zachary S., Madelyn E., Julieta B., and Joanne K.
Zachary S. :
How is your experience so far? - "It's been harder than walking normally."
Why did you decide to sign up to be in a wheelchair? - "It sounded fun to be in a wheelchair."
How did you feel when the speakers said your name? - "I felt scared. I didn't know the struggles I was going to face."
Prediction: Will this day be easy or hard? - "I think it'll be fairly easy."
Have you dealt with any struggles so far? - "People have been taking me away a lot, it can get annoying sometimes."
Madelyn E. :
How is your experience so far? - "It's been okay."
Why did you decide to sign up to be in a wheelchair? - "It kinda sounded fun!"
How did you feel when the speakers said your name? - "I was surprised because I didn't expect to be chosen."
Prediction: Will this day be easy or hard? - "I think it's going to be hard."
Any struggles so far? - "Wheeling the wheelchair is harder than I expected..."
Julieta B. :
How is your experience so far? - "It's good, although I have faced some difficulties."
Why did you decide to sign up to be in a wheelchair? - "It sounded like fun, and I wanted to feel what it was like to drive a wheelchair instead of being pushed."
How did you feel when the speakers said your name? - "Excited, but scared at the same time."
Prediction: Will this day be easy or hard? - "I think because of the ramps on the bridges it will be pretty hard."
Any struggles so far? - "DEFINITELY. I HATE going on the bridge and it's only been half an hour!"
Joanne K. :
How is your experience so far? - "It was honestly a lot harder than I expected!"
Why did you decide to sign up to be in a wheelchair? - "I thought it would be fun to experience this because I don't think I would have another chance to do this kind of thing."
How did you feel when the speakers aid your name? - "Shocked but kind of excited because I was hoping to be picked."
Prediction: Will this day be easy or hard? - "I think this day will be hard. . . I've been struggling already, so..."
Any struggles so far? - "YES! Trying to get myself up on the bridge was so much more harder than I thought it would be! My arms are still sore... Also, people keep doing wheelies on my wheelchair and one kid even picked me up in the air! Mobility is definitely hard, but getting treated normally is too!"
Conclusion:
So, now that we've finished our Q&A, it's time to conclude all the aspects of being in a wheelchair!
If you have or haven't been in a wheelchair here are some of the things we've learned:
Moving around is actually harder than people expected! Wheeling up or around things is hard, but moving in general is pretty tricky too.
Though there were struggles, people think it was a fun experience to try out and they felt like they kind of understood the way that they were somewhat treated differently by people; whether it be good or bad.
People can underestimate things that might seem "easy"! We definitely learned that when we had the wheelchair with no one to push us..
Lastly, I think we all (people with wheelchairs) partly understand how hard it is to have some sort of disability! There were physical challenges but some people might have felt "weird" or "different" , too.
