Bombardier Beetle

by Kyle Rowe

The Bombardier Beetle is truly an amazing creature. According to the National Wildlife Federation, it has a range of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Australia. They thrive in areas with temperate woodlands and grasslands, where there is ground cover to hide under. They usually only grow up to 2.5 centimeters long.

It’s main claim to fame is there ability to shoot a boiling corrosive substance at their predators. They can twist their abdomen so that the substance is sprayed 270° around them. There are two chambers within their abdomen that keep the critical reactants for the corrosive substance apart until the beetle is ready to discharge the substance.
