Room 5c

Welcome back to school and welcome to Term Two!

This term we have a whole school focus on Kitchen Chemistry. Our big idea in Year 4 is that physical changes are reversible and chemical changes are irreversible. Another big idea we will cover is that matter has physical and chemical properties and they determine how we use materials.A separate permission slip will be coming home so students are able to take part in the ‘eating’ aspect of some activities. We will also visit the Science Roadshow being held at Farm Cove on Monday the 28th of May. A separate letter will be sent home with more information about this.

This term we also have Move and Groove. All classes in the school will be choosing a song, choreographing a dance, organising costumes and presenting to an audience. The performances will be in the last week of this term.

This term each Year 4 class will be working with Mrs Murray in the art room for their ‘Art intensive’. Please ensure your child has an art shirt (an old shirt to cover their uniforms) ahead of time and a 1A5 art book to work in. Students will be making collages with a ‘Wild West’ theme.

Swimming begins next Wednesday for Year 4. The lessons are held at Lloyd Elsmore Pools. Please help your child to remember to pack their togs/towel/goggles ready for Wednesday morning. A notice should have come home about this. Please sign the permission slip and get your child to hand it to their teacher as soon as possible.

In week 3, Auckland Transport are coming into school to work with the Year 4 students in developing ‘scooter skills’. A separate letter will be sent home with more information about this.

We will be celebrating Book Week in week 9 with the theme of ‘Wild West’! The week will consist of many fun activities including a performance. More information will come home later in the term.

This term we will begin using our Matific accounts during maths time. Thank you to everyone who has paid $10 for their child’s account. Please pay $10 to your child’s teacher as soon as possible if you haven’t already.

Other important dates to remember:

  • Lunch with the Principal - Week 2 (11th May)
  • Year 4 leading Senior School assembly - Friday week 5
  • Queen’s Birthday - Week 6 (4th June)
  • Disco - Week 6 (8th June)
  • Class photos - Week 7 (12th June)
  • Cross Country and school walk - Week 7 (15th June)

Remember that our school website is full of important information about our school and you can subscribe to the newsletter http://wakaaranga.school.nz/.

Our school app can be downloaded for free on your phone or tablet - just search up Wakaaranga School in your app store.

You can search up Wakaaranga School on Facebook as well which has photos and messages posted by the school.

I look forward to continuing to work with you in supporting your child’s learning in Year 4.

TERM ONE 2018

Welcome to 5c for 2018

This term we have started the year getting to know each other and creating a positive classroom. We have spent time exploring the Treaty of Waitangi and put together our own class guidelines to follow for the year.

5C Class Treaty

  1. We will be respectful to everyone we meet.

This means:

  • We will always listen when someone is talking.
  • We will take turns and work together.
  • We will let people play if they have no one to play with.
  • We will be a leader and not a boss

2. We will be kind - It’s cool to be kind!

3. We will always try our best and never give up (even when things get hard)

4. We will follow the school rules.

5. We will look after the computers in our class.

The ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’ programme has been another important topic we have covered this term. Students will learn and apply a range of skills that they can use when interacting with others.

Seaweek is on the 3rd to the 11th of March. We will take time this term to explore sea related activities.

Other topics we hope to cover this term will be: Chinese New Year, Easter Activities, the Commonwealth Games and ANZAC Day.

In Year 4 we have Ako Time. All Year 4 teachers plan and teach a unit they are passionate about. Each class rotates around so they have worked with each teacher by the end of the term.

Mrs Samuel: Digital Citizenship - Rings of Responsibility

Mrs Dale: Drama - Introduction to Drama

Mrs Freeman: Visual Arts - Maori Pou Pou and Mihi

Mr Dean: Getting excited about Science!

We look forward to continuing to work with you in supporting your child’s learning in Year 4. Remember if you have any concerns throughout the year, please email (samuel@wakaaranga.school.nz) or make an appointment to see me.

Kind regards,

Sarah Samuel 5c
