Introduction

Year 10 Marine Biology is an exciting new course offered for 2027. It is a hands-on science course where classroom theory meets the ocean. You will learn about marine organisms and ecosystems, ocean chemistry and the water cycle. 

We will also dive into some local biodiversity as we investigate native fish and shellfish species and their deep connections to mātauranga Māori and kaitiakitanga, earning 5 credits. 

This course includes interactive practical work and in-water snorkelling sessions led by EMR. Water confidence and a willingness to get wet are strongly encouraged.

Course Outline 

• Ocean Systems & Ecosystems: Understand how life thrives underwater, examine marine food webs, and trace the water cycle from land to sea.

• Ocean Chemistry: Understand how the chemistry of the ocean is changing and the impacts this has.

• Mātauranga Māori & Marine Life: Complete a 5-credit unit standard investigating a native fish and shellfish species, discovering their biological importance and cultural significance to Māori.

• Snorkel skills: Practical sessions in both the pool and ocean to examine marine life in their natural habitat
