12MUSS

Level 2 Music Studies

Introduction

In this course students will continue to develop their composition skills and musicianship understanding. They will compose and notate two substantial pieces of music using more advanced composition techniques. (Composition at Level 1 is a prerequisite), they will complete an instrumentation and deepen their knowledge and understanding of specialist music software for both notation and sequencing. Students will also have some choice in which written standards they complete (ranging from investigating NZ music to the history and development of music technology equipment and techniques). Students are also encouraged to continue to develop their solo performance skills, on one or two instruments. All students taking NCEA Music are offered free weekly itinerant tuition on their chosen instrument/s. This course is an important step if students wish to continue through to Level 3 music.

Well, Chief Product Officer for Microsoft Panos Panay has said:

“I succeeded as an entrepreneur not despite the fact that I had a music degree, but precisely because of it.

"Learning how to play a musical instrument and becoming a musician is an exercise in developing good listening skills, experimenting, overcoming repeated failure, self-discipline, and successful collaboration.

“It is simply impossible to become a successful music professional unless one also masters certain theoretical concepts, develops good presentation and improvisational skills and, ultimately, attains that elusive quality of originality that only comes once fear of failure is overtaken by the desire to acquire a new insight, a fresh perspective, and a unique voice.”
