Aloha A5 Ohana,
I hope this email finds you and your family well. As we begin our final week of the school year, many will find this time to be sad. I have to remind myself (and I would like to remind others) that it is also a very exciting time! Your children are now ready to continue their adventure as they have outgrown elementary school! I have seen tremendous growth in each one of them! When given the right tools and wholeheartedly believing and truly trusting they can- these kids WILL reach the stars and beyond!
I am so excited for all that they will do, big and small
Attached is the newsletter for the upcoming week along with the weekly recess schedule I will be posting on google classroom. I will post the link for the recess each day on google classroom as well. I hope to make this last week together a time to enjoy, smile and laugh!
All my best,
Leah
Aloha A5 Ohana,
I hope this email finds you all well. It is wild to think we are just a couple weeks from the school year coming to a close! With all of the changes that have come about, I don't doubt your child may be experiencing a variety of emotions as this is anything from what we could have imagined the end of the school year being like . With that being said, I am very proud of all of our keiki for their strength and and their ability to remind us of what is truly important in challenging times
Today is the grade 5 locker clean out and I am anticipating this being a difficult process for some, my family included. I hope everyone is able to go through it as smoothly as possible and I would like to encourage that we help our children whether it be through talking, a simple hug or just being extra aware of their emotions surrounding this day. I will be taking my son to clean out his locker and will have to cut our online recess short. Recess on today will be from 9:00-9:30 and there will be no A5 Homeroom (just for today Monday 5/18).
Otherwise, we are keeping lessons and meetings similar to weeks past with no new changes. Attached you find the grade 5 Dashboard for more details of the weekly schedule along with the grade 5 newsletter.
Please feel free to reach out to me should you have any questions.
All my best,
Leah
Good Morning A5 Ohana,
I hope all the moms, grandmas and aunties were treated extra special yesterday, Happy Mother's Day! Attached to this email is the grade 5 newsletter for the upcoming week of Distance Learning along with the Dashboard. As we get closer to the end of the school year, there are a lot of things to do! This week the newsletter is all about reminders ;) Please note that if you are interested in a memory book and have already sent an email to the Learning Hui, you do NOT need to fill out the google form. Furthermore, there will be more information to follow on how to order/purchase the memory book.
As always, please reach out if you have any questions or if there is anything I can help with. Thank you so much for your support and all that you do!
All my best,
Leah
Aloha A5 Families,
Here is the newsletter for the upcoming week. This week we wanted to provide you with reminders of the upcoming and important dates that are specific to grade 5 students. You should have already received this information already from Wai'alae Weekly and Mrs. Hermes but we wanted to be sure you could find everything you need in one place :)
I will be sending the Dashboard for Week 6 as soon as we have all of the lessons ready. When you get the Dashboard, you will notice I have added two live sessions specific for A5 students. They will be held on:
Mondays: 10:30-11:15
Fridays: 12:45-1:30
These sessions are an opportunity to review, discuss and share about the lessons as well as practice strategies.
I am looking forward to a great week!
All my best,
Leah
Aloha A5 Families,
It was a beautiful weekend with lots of sunshine I hope you and your family were able to get out for some fresh air and enjoy! I have linked in the Grade 5 Newsletter as well as the Dashboard for the week ahead. We are following the same routine as previous weeks but hope to clear up some of the confusion with the small groups by providing you with a google document that can be used to sign up for specific reading and math small groups as well as giving the link to the actual session. Please note that the document for small groups is a live document. As a reminder, your child has access to all of the video lessons, packet activities, enrichment activities (as well as the Dashboard) on their Google Classroom for their convenience.
Please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
All my best,
Leah
Aloha A5 Families,
As challenging as these times are, I find myself reflecting on all of the positive things that my family and I are so grateful for. Each day is filled with so many emotions with highs and lows, smiles and frustrations and on some days, tears. I hope that your family is finding the positive, smiling with one another and if there are tears, you are able to be there for one another.
The attached newsletter for this week outlines a slightly different approach to what our distance learning looks like as we have gotten the green light to teach new content. I have also attached additional information (Distance Learning Slides) to help clarify what we are trying to do as a grade level, why we are making these changes and how it might look. Mr. Young has graciously recorded a narrated version of these slides to add more detail (Narrated Distance Learning Slides). I will also be going over the Distance Learning slides in our Monday chat with the A5 class to help with explaining this transition the best that I can.
Please know that we only want what is best for you, your family and of course, your child. Many of these changes have not been easy and the idea of "distance learning" has been a steep learning curve for myself. I love to help kids laugh and ultimately enjoy what they are doing and learning. So being out of the classroom and not being able to be with the students has been really tough! I hope that together, we can keep our kids happy and engaged.
Furthermore, I am far from comfortable with technology compared to many. I am trying my best to keep up with the adjustments that are being made from week to week and I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding. With that being said, I am sure there will be things that need to be fined along the way. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions.
All my best,
Leah
Happy Aloha Friday
I hope this email finds you and your family happy, healthy and safe. Attached is the newsletter for our second week of Online Enrichment and grade level updates.
Have a great weekend,
Leah
Aloha A5 Families,
First and foremost, I hope this message finds you safe, healthy and well. The changes that are upon us have created unexpected and unforeseen challenges. However, as your child's teacher, I am here to support the best that I can. With that being said, the teachers have been meeting over the past week to discuss and design plans for providing enrichment activities for students during this time.
I understand that the structure of our "school days" will be different now. As your children are home, I realize that this may add to your backpack as a parent, but the idea behind these activities is that your self-directed fifth grader will be able do it independently, at a time that works for your household. Your child might just need your support, approval, or occasional participation.
As you dive deeper into this email, I understand that it may initially seem overwhelming with information coming from many directions. Please take your time to go through all of it, including the multiple attachments. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the information presented.
The Grade 5 Newsletter (attached) has detailed information about the next few weeks. It includes information related to:
Online enrichment activities
Live video chats via Zoom or Google Meets
Grade level events
Special subjects and Learning Commons
Messages from other support teachers (counselors and MLL)
Online Enrichment
These activities are optional and students are not obligated to complete or participate in activities. Nothing will be graded or go towards progress reports. However, we feel these activities will be a good way for students to stay engaged and connect with their classmates and teachers as much as possible during these uncertain times.
How does my child get these enrichment activities?
The online enrichment activities for each week will be posted to your child's google classroom account.
Please have your child check their google classroom on Monday March 30th to get started with the enrichment activities!
Your child will first login to their school account / email and then go to their A5 google classroom. Students should be very familiar with how to do this as we have been using google classroom since the beginning of the school year.
I suggest having your child show you the enrichment activities for the week (on google classroom) so you know what they are up to ;)
see Online Enrichment Information Sheet (attached) for basic information
There are four components to our online enrichment classroom:
Enrichment activities - Each week there will be 5 activities presented to students. Students will have access to a google slide document where all activities are located. Students can choose which activities they would like to do and will have access to previous activities as well. Each activity has instructions of how to "submit" their work.
Office hours - I will have office hours every Tuesday and Thursday and from 9:00am - 10:00am. During this time I will be able to immediately respond to emails. You are welcomed to send emails at any time, but if you need an immediate response, these times would be best.
Online recess - Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00am - 9:30am. I will open a Zoom meeting for students to socialize face to face (virtually). Students are welcome to join and interact with their peers. I will also be on the chat to supervise. An ID and password will be sent to google classroom for each meeting (see Online Enrichment Information attachment for more info). The google permission form must be completed prior to the initial chat. The first Zoom meeting will be Monday, March 30 at 9:00am. The ID and password to login will be posted on google classroom for students who have a permission form submitted.
Weekly newsletters - Every week, grade 5 will send out a newsletter detailing the week ahead.
*Students are welcome to continue accessing online resources (iReady, Reading A to Z, Epic Books, BrainPop, etc.).
Why so many attachments?
We want to be sure that you get all of the information you need (or might need!) for making this transition as smooth as possible.
Grade 5 Newsletter: Grade 5 overview and information :) Please review.
SST Newsletter: Memo from Special Subject Teachers (Music, Hawaiiana, PE and Art). Please review.
Virtual Learning Commons: Memo from Learning Commons. Please review.
Google Form: permission for your child to use and participate in Zoom (online chat for social interaction). Please fill out and submit. Permission for Zoom / Google Meets. Students who do not have this form filled out will not be able to participate in "online recess".
Online Enrichment Info Sheet: Zoom (online recess) and Google Classroom Information.
Your family's health and safety is a priority during this time. We understand that this is a period of adjustment for everyone and recognize the need for flexibility and understanding. Please know that we are also navigating new territory in implementing online enrichment activities and we will be learning together!
Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there is any other way I can be of help.
All my best,
Leah
