Aloha B8 `Ohana,
Thank you for your hard work so far, we are now on Week 6! I am attaching a link to another Parent Check In. This helps us make sure that our efforts best meet your needs. We would greatly appreciate it if you could quickly fill it out!
A couple of very important reminders:
Sunday May 10, 2020 is MOTHERS DAY. Please make sure to have a wonderful day of love and pampering, we all appreciate you and your hard work so much!
Week of May 4-8, 2020 is Teacher Appreciation Week. We love your keiki like our own, so make sure to give extra Aloha when you see a hard working teacher, especially during these uncharted times. (:
Thank you again for putting in your best team effort, as we enter our last month of schooling for this 2019-2020 school year. We’ve received a few questions regarding student supplies, please know that teachers are working to put together supply bags for families to take home, however we need to comply with social distancing protocols which means we are not able to do this at once. Thank you for your patience, and we will make sure to get everything ready for families, and we will reach out with more information as soon as we can.
Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any other questions. I'm so sad thinking about packing everything up without saying goodbye to all of you in person. It has truly been an amazing year.
Mahalo,
Mrs. V and 3rd Grade Team
Aloha B8 `Ohana,
Welcome to week 5! There are a couple of things this week to be aware of.
1. We hope you all had a chance to read the letter from Waialae about teacher privacy. If not, you can read it below:
Aloha Families,
Videos and Live Meet sessions are provided by our teachers for studentsʻ educational use ONLY. They are posted in closed platforms (Seesaw, Google Classroom, Unlisted Youtube sites, etc.) and are not meant to be shared beyond the classroom.
Do NOT screen capture and/or post these instructional videos or other teacher-created media on any social media sites. They should not be shared via email or through any analog means. If you have already done so, please remove them from your sites.
We advocate strongly for the protection of our studentsʻ privacy, and do the same for our teachers.
Sincerely, Waiʻalae Administration Team
2. The kids have gotten into a nice routine. Reminders for daily Enrichment Activities:
Check Google Classroom daily by 8:30 a.m. Daily Menu Choice Boards are posted on Google Classroom.
New content has been introduced in all subject areas. The kids have been instructed to complete all activities on the top of their Menu Board in each column. Free Choice options are done only when all activities at the top of the Menu Board are completed.
If I notice kids not turning in work online, I will reach out via email to parents to check in. If you have your own home learning routine at home, that is awesome. Keep doing what works best for you and your `ohana during this time. I just want to make sure you all feel supported in the children's continuity of learning at home remotely.
Please reach out to me anytime you need support with your child and setting expectations with work at home.
If screen time is a concern, please remember that all activities can be done on paper. Just take a photo of the work and upload to Seesaw if you want Mrs. V to check the work.
Google Meets Video Chats are daily at 9:00 a.m. Link is posted at 9:00 a.m. on Google Classroom to prevent any students from logging on to the chat before Mrs. V. We have begun to do live lessons in Word Work and Math during our daily Video Chats. This week we will do Language Arts lessons in our Video Chats as well. We have also had guest speakers come to support us in our virtual project on, "How can we support and encourage each other during this COVID-19 quarantine?"
Click on Mrs. V's Office Hour to sign up for a 30 minute slot to get help from Mrs. V on tech support or any activities on the Menu Choice Board. Just click on a slot, type your child's name in, and click on save. The link to the Google Meets Video Chat will be in the calendar appointment box. Please sign up for one slot a day. Also, please do not reserve weekly slots. Thank you so much.
We will be sending out a survey next week to check in on how everything has been going.
Keep up the good work parents and families! Thank you so much for everything you are doing. I know it can feel chaotic at times, but I really want everyone to know just how amazing you are all doing! Parents, remember to take deep breaths and please take time for yourselves, too. The kids have been really working hard at home. I always tell them to listen to parents and to do their part at home, too. Please take care and stay healthy.
With Love,
Mrs. V
Aloha B8 `Ohana,
Thank you for your continued hard work! The kids have been hard at work completing the Menu Choice Board Activities. I'm really proud of their quality work. They have been doing an awesome job at reading my comments and making revisions when needed. I will be dropping off our Medical Worker thank you letters to Aunty Allison on Sunday! Yay!
This week, we launched Character Analysis for reading. Next week, we will start doing Word Work lessons and Math lessons during our live Video Chats at 9:00. We will also finish up our Opinion Essay we started before Spring Break. I would like the kids to start a second Opinion Essay as well.
The kids have gotten into a nice routine. They have been checking the Google Classroom daily by 8:30 and submitting work on Seesaw or Google Classroom. By submitting work, I can check and give feedback to help them.
We had some tech difficulties on Google Meets a couple times, but the kids have been awesome about it all. Our daily 9:00 a.m. Video Chats have been a nice way to start our day off.
Some reminders:
Activities are encouraged, not required! Please don’t stress you or your student out with completing all assignments. Lean into their curiosity and allow them to voice their needs too. As always, if you need support in this area, please let me know. I got you back!
Don’t forget your quality time. Some assignments can be done together as a family (: Make this learning time a bonding time if you can.
Most assignments can be printed and posted as a picture to limit screen time.
Taj's birthday is this Sunday. He requested a video chat with the class for lunch. If your child is able to make it, the link will be posted on Google Classroom to celebrate with Taj at 11:30 on a video chat. We also sang a bunch of Happy Birthdays today for our classmates who had birthdays.
Please know that I am here for your support and feel free to reach out when you need to. You are all doing an amazing job! Thank you for your support. I am here to support you in routines at home as well. We are in this together!
With Love,
Mrs. V
Aloha Grade 3 Families,
Congratulations for making it to Week 3! Thank you for all of your patience as our 3rd grade teachers navigate all the new tech tools. It was nice to see and chat with all of you who made it to our B8 Parent Check In Video Chat on Thursday. We tried to brainstorm ideas to support each other and came up with the following to help with managing things at home:
1. Managing Emails
A lot of us, including myself, were getting a lot of emails , especially notifications from Seesaw every time something was posted. We found out that you need to change the settings in your Family Seesaw Account to turn off getting email notification. This is a video tutorial to help you do that. Hopefully this helps with the email load.
2. Managing Platforms
Another suggestion was to use Seesaw to send out updates and newsletters to families. I will give that a try. From now on, class newsletters and updates will be sent through Seesaw Family accounts.
-Google Classroom: Menu Boards will be posted on Google Classroom daily. Assignments linked to Google Documents will also be here. Your child is to check Google Classroom daily by 8:30. Daily Video Chats will be at 9:00 a.m. through Google Meets and the link will be posted 5 minutes before on Google Classroom to help prevent children from entering the chat without a teacher present.
-Seesaw: This is where photos, and other work will be posted. Family messages and updates will be posted here as well. For an offline option, have your child do the activities on the Menu Board on paper. Take a photo of the work and upload on to Seesaw. The kids have been really good about this so far. Seeing their work lets me know that they are okay. I tend to worry if I do not see anything from them. Thank you so much. Please let me know if you do not have access to the Student Home Seesaw Account.
-Email: If you are more comfortable with email, please continue to use email to communicate. I check all three platforms daily.
-Devices: It really helps to have additional devices to support at home learning. Sharing a device with multiple people can make it quite stressful. Please take up the school's offer to borrow a Chromebook. Email jconstantinou@waialae.edu and msumida@waialae.edu to set it up. The school is able to loan a device to each student who attends our school if need be.
3. Mrs. V Office Hour Sign Ups
-To help support you at home, I created a Google Calendar Mrs. V Office Hour sign up. Slots are 30 minutes. Click on the link below to add the calendar to your Google Calendar.
Link to add Mrs. V's Office Hours Calendar to your Google Calendar
-Click on an appointment slot and click save. The link to the Google Meets Video Chat is already in the appointment slot.
-To be fair to others, please do not reserve more than one slot at a time a day. Also, please do not reserve weekly slots.
-Office hours will be only for tech support and Menu Choice activity support.
4. Video Chats
-Thank you for your patience as I tried to figure out the logistics for this. I think I finally am able to nail down a schedule. It is below:
Thank you for your patience, collaboration, and hard work juggling all the responsibilities. I am always here if you need anything. We are in this together!
Mahalo,
Third Grade Team
Dear 3rd Grade Families,
Hope you all had a chance to navigate through our enrichment activities. Thank you so much for your patience and support during this first week of remote learning enrichment activities. It was a new experience for all of us, teacher included. If you are having difficulties accessing technology due to a lack of a device, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mel Sumida (msumida@waialae.edu). She can organize paperwork in order to lend out devices.
As we continue to navigate through these times, we are asking parents to fill out our Parent Survey. If you have time, please fill out this survey pertaining to our first week of enrichment activities. This will help us understand how to best support you during this time.
Attached to this newsletter will be the following:
Parent Survey-Please click on this link to fill out the online Google Form Parent Survey.
New Choice Menu Boards will continue to be posted every morning by 8:00 a.m. on Google Classroom. A friendly reminder that all Enrichment Activities are optional. Please work at your own pace and do what you can. Please email me anytime you need any assistance. Thank you so much.
Please Take Care,
Mrs. V and the Grade 3 Teachers
Dear B8 `Ohana,
I hope you are all doing well. While school is put on hold to prevent further spread of coronavirus, our goal is to maintain student engagement. We will provide enrichment activities for your child. Communication will be sent out via email for updates. We understand that you and your child may not be able to participate in all activities. Please know that these activities are encouraged, but not required. If videos are provided, it will be recorded, and can be accessed at any time through our Google Classrooms or Seesaw. We are here to support each other as best as possible during this time. Hang in there. Many of us have children of our own at home, too. We are in this together. Please know that things may change along the way. This is new for teachers, too.
As a 3rd grade team, we have compiled Menu Boards which includes activities the students can choose from and links to all the resources. Menu Boards will be posted on Google Classroom Daily. Your child does not need to do all of them. Work at your own pace and feel free to edit the Menu Choice Boards as you see fit. Please try to have your child check their Google Classroom daily. These are just Enrichment Activities and none of the activities will be graded and none will have a due date. If you need your student’s log in, please contact me. Below is a list of attachments and tips for parents at home for doing Enrichment Activities. I tried it out on my kids at home, too. We understand there is a lot of information, please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Mahalo for your patience and cooperation during this time!

Parent Tips For Enrichment Activities Routines
Establish routines and expectations
Important to go over use of technology and the internet for Enrichment Activities.
Go over and fill out Video Chat Permission Form. to participate in class live video chat sessions and virtual meetups.

Parents please try to check email. Newsletters will be sent via email every Friday. Other updates may be sent throughout the week.
Students try to check Google Classroom daily for activities.
Start each day by looking at the Student Enrichment Choice Menus on Google Classroom. Go over with your child what will be done.
End each day with a check-in with how Enrichment Activities are going. Schedule check ins throughout the day as well.
Take an active role in helping your child process their learning, but also do what you can to balance. Give your child space to figure out and navigate the different learning sites and to troubleshoot. Most of the activities can be done independently by your child.
Establish times for quiet and reflection.
Encourage physical activity and/or exercise
20 minutes a day
Physical breaks after about every 60 minutes.
Remain mindful of your child’s stress or worry. Feel free to scale back if the enrichment activity seems too much or if your child needs a break.
Monitor how much time your child is spending online
Keep your children social. Set rules and monitor use of social media and other platforms to remotely communicate with others .
