The students had made up Presents and Parcels word problems in February so I hope they have done some of the word problems by choosing/cutting out the word problems they want to do, gluing it to a folder paper, solving it in 2 different ways (pictures, numbers, and/or words), and labeling their answers. Some word problems have 2 steps to solve it so have your child show his/her work for each step.

Aloha C7 families-
I hope this message still finds everyone healthy and safe. Here are tips from PE teachers around the country to stay active:
Set a goal of 30 minutes of vigorous exercise a day, 60 minutes for kids. Break time into blocks of 15 minutes four times a day or 30 minutes twice a day.
Make it a routine at the same time in your daily schedule. If it’s a habit, it will stick.
Get outside whenever possible.
Ask your kids to teach you a skill they learned in PE at school. Learn a new skill each day and make up new exercises to add.
Take advantage of online resources like GoNoodle and Cosmic Kids Yoga – they’re fun and family friendly.
Have a KidsBop dance party. Let older kids create playlists for a family dance party.
Get out jump ropes, balls, raquets and other sports equipment and play a classic game or make up a new one.
Tap into social media and ask for recommendations from friends and neighbors to stay active and de-stress.
April 22nd, Earth Day, is a national day for everyone to focus on the environment and caring for our planet. It is an annual event celebrated around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and now includes events in more than 193 countries. Here are some ideas to do for Earth Day:
Here are the Kid-friendly Environmental Movies for an Earth Day Movie Night: https://redtri.com/have-an-earth-day-movie-night-with-these-environmental-movies/slide/3
Here are suggestions to make an Earth Day sign: https://www.earthday.org/actions/make-an-earth-day-window-sign/
Make and grow a garden: Help them plan and layout their garden. Each child can have/make their own garden journal. In it, they can plan out what they want to put in their garden, write and draw their observations as their garden comes to life over the course of the next few weeks, write/draw/label what plants need in order to grow, and write, draw, and color pages about the life cycle of a plant. This garden and journal are for fun.
Make a recycled garden collage picture: http://laughpaintcreate.blogspot.com/2011/03/recycled-gardens.html
Mystery Science has a video on how old Earth is with ideas on how to reuse recyclables: https://mysteryscience.com/mini-lessons/old-earth?loc=mini-lesson-button#slide-id-8308
Here are questions you can ask/reflect with your child about Earth Day:
What can we recycle?
What can we do around the house to conserve energy?
What do plants do for us and the Earth?
Why shouldn’t we litter and what is littering?
Why shouldn’t we dump trash in the ocean?
What can we make from old or recyclable items?
Thank you, parents, for having your child choose activities to do each day (read everyday and do 2 or more activities) from the C7 Syllabus and SeeSaw and have emailed me the books he/she has read. When your child reads a Kids A-Z book, have them do the quizzes and just let me know the title and rating. I can get the rest of the information from Kids A-Z. The main thing is to have your child read everyday.
Hopefully later this week, we’ll have the video chat set up for our children. I want to check in with the children to see what they remember and if they understand how to do the things that they need to do now and in the beginning of 3rd grade. I’ll email the interested parents the information about the video chat (what days, times, topics, etc.) .
There are letters from the counselors, Special Subject teachers, and Learning Commons and Parent Tips for Online Learning (this was a parent session on tips for online education and the presentation is in the Admin. Corner) which you can find on the Distance Learning Jump Page: https://sites.google.com/waialae.edu/remote/home

I hope this message finds everyone still healthy and safe. Here are tips from Keiki Talk by Dr. Allana Coffee - psychologist
Give children the facts.
Validate their feelings.
Give empowering messages:
Stay home and stay well.
Get along with each other.
Wash hands.
Take care of the inside of our homes by reducing germs.
Take care of our neighbors and kupuna which can lead to taking care of our community, state, country, and planet.
Don’t share your stress with the children.

I got an idea from Marlon’s mom about making a syllabus so I have it attached to this letter. It is an outline of subjects with the possible things to do and the websites connected to each subject. You and your child can choose which ones to do each day (read everyday and do 2 or more activities). I have also listed a reading website called Kids A-Z or Razz Kids (it’s the same thing) on it and I’ll be emailing each of you the information needed to get on this website for our class this week. It has books for the students to read at their reading level.

If possible, please have your child continue doing the assignments on the Spring Letter. As for writing in his/her journal, if he/she can write at least one entry each week, that would be fine. Here are some other suggestions for their writings (if possible, please make a copy of these writings for their journal if it’s a letter so they can give it to the person they wrote it to):
Write letters to nursing home residents to spread joy.
Write letters of gratitude to health care workers, grocery store clerks, postman, and other essential workers.
Make a series of comics to share family stories
Share oral traditions and famly stories in writing.
Co-writing with parents on cookbooks, poetry books, story books, how-to books- include sketches/pictures.
Write to a family member and ask them to write back
Please continue to have your child read for 30 minutes everyday and email 1-3 (or more) book information (title, author’s last name, genre, # of pages, and ratings 1-5) to me each week so I can fill in their book lists and the genre chart.
If your child wants to go on Spelling City, he/she can go on any unit (1-6) and the lists A/C are the easier lists and lists B/D are the harder lists. Lists Z1 & Z2 are very easy. Here are the directions:
You can find our class’ spelling lists by visiting my VocabularySpellingCity homepage at https://www.spellingcity.com/wakata
You don't need to log into the site to access my homepage. This should go directly to my homepage. If it doesn’t, just go to Search/ Teachers, type ywakata, click on the chart on Yvonne Wakata. Our class' word lists will appear on the left side of the page. Then just select the list and click on Free to view the free activities.
I have attached the counselors’ newsletter. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at ywakata@waialae.edu
Please stay well and safe. I really miss all of you!

I hope this message finds everyone healthy and safe. We have been meeting as a faculty throughout this week. Mr. Constantinou has emailed some updates, so please make sure you have read updates regarding school closures and please continue to look out for information from him and the rest of the administrators. As you folks are aware, things are changing quickly.
For now, we will be providing enrichment for children. We understand that not everyone has access to devices or internet service, so these activities are not required.
We encourage use of these resources, but please be mindful of your child’s screen time. Here is some helpful information from the Mayo Clinic regarding screen time: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/childrens-health/in-depth/screen-time/art-20047952

If the students can continue doing the assignments on the Spring Letter, that would be great, especially read everyday for 30 minutes and study addition/subtraction/letter keys on the computer. Please email me if you have any questions or concerns at ywakata@waialae.edu
Please stay well and safe.

Here’s a message from the Counselors:
Hello Parents and Students,
As the School Counselors for Waialae Elementary, Mr. Hervey and I want to send out our warmest alohas to your family. This is a challenging time, however with love, patience and understanding, this can also be a great time for you to bond closer together as families.
With new information regarding the COVID-19 virus coming in at such a rapid, overwhelming pace, we understand that everyone has been affected in one way or another. As we forge forward, and try to adjust our schedules and domestic dynamics within our households, please slow down, take some deep breaths, and enjoy having your loved ones around you.
Keeping your children and yourselves happy and safe is our primary priority. We would like to suggest that you keep things basic and simple. Develop simple routines and responsibilities at home for everyone in your household, as you see fit for your family. Make sure you are eating healthy, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and if possible, getting some daily exercise.
There are an abundance of online resources that are available, however, please refrain from becoming overwhelmed with too much information (TMI), and know and trust that you know what's best for your family.
In the coming days and/or weeks, Michael and I will be keeping in touch with you and share some insights and information that you may find useful for your families.
Take care, be safe, and be healthy,
Mark and Michael
