W8BYH's Ham Radio Trunk Sale

27 April 2024  Update - New items added! See below. I've added a few really nice AM/FM radios, a Yaesu VX-6 handheld, a Heil Pro Micro headset, and a Pelican 1520 case. Check it out!

It's time to clean the shack and make room for some new projects! Over the past few years I've accumulated a bit of Amateur Radio gear that no longer meets my needs. This equipment has either been replaced with more modern gear, has a lot of duplicate capability I have in other radios that I plan on keeping, or just no longer fits my interests

Unless stated this gear is in Very Good-to-Excellent physical condition and Excellent operating condition, and I will give you a chance to test the equipment before you buy and warrant its functionality for two weeks after the sale. The pictures you see below are the actual items being offered for sale

I really don't want the hassle of putting these items on eBay, eHam, QRZ.com, etc. I'd much rather try to sell to a local ham first. I enjoy making face-to-face sales and helping local hams out when possible. For the prices listed I will meet you anywhere in or very close to Fayette County, or even deliver to your QTH if you live close to me.

This website is in no way associated with KK4GQ, the Fayette County Amateur Radio Club, or Fayette ARES.

However, if these items sell locally then 5% of the proceeds from the sale of items on this page will be donated to the Fayette County Amateur Radio Club, KK4GQ. Your purchase will help Amateur Radio activities in Fayette County!

And, I can take PayPal!

If you have an interest in any of these items please contact me by email at w8byh@arrl.net

Thanks!

Yaesu VX-6

(Added April 27, 2024)

The last of Yaesu's famous 'micro' HT line, and one that was so popular it's still being manufactured today. It's a rugged little dual band radio that is also waterproof!

For years this was my 'daily driver' HT, but I've switched everything over to Icom, so this one just sits around collecting dust. Physically (and electronically) it's in excellent shape because it's always lived its life in the Yaesu leather 'pouch'

The package includes the radio, charger, speaker mic, micropone adapers if you want to use an after-market headset (like the Heil HT headsets), a Nifty manual and a SignalStick dual band antenna.

What's not included is the original box, manual or antenna, 'cuz I can't find 'em. If I do unearth them before the sale I'll include what I find.

Price for everything is $175

Yaesu FT-818

(Added April 21, 2024)

Looking for a nice, clean FT-818 all mode HF/VHF/UHF QRP rig? You can't do much better than this little gem. I picked this up two years ago as a spare to my first FT-818, but I find I'm a bit over-stock on 'spare' QRP rigs. This comes with the original box, all accessories and documentation, and includes the Portable Zero side rails. It's as like-new as you are likely to find.

Prices on FT-818's are all over the place on QRZ.com and eBay, but $500 seems a fair price

Yaesu FT-897 & LDG Sidecar Tuner

(Added April 21, 2024)

I got this in trade a few years ago and figured I'd turn it into a full-time portable rig, but I went another direction with that idea. This radio is in very good cosmetic and excellent operating condition. Of note, the display shows no signs of 'tiger striping', an issue that plagued some production runs of the FT-897 and 857. There's also a bonus - this radio has the rarer than hens' teeth Collins mechanical SSB filter installed (Yaesu part # XF119SN).  This filter alone, if you can find one, sells for almost $200. The sale includes the radio, LDG tuner, microphone, installed filter and orginal box. I do not have the original manual, but that's available on-line. I'll also include the Harbor Freight protective case.

Price for everything is $750. If you'd like to save a bit of money, I can remove the Collins filter and let the package go for $600.

AM/FM Radios

(Added April 24, 2024)

Two (semi-) classics! One GE SuperRadio III and one FreePlay wind-up radio. Each has a story.

If you've been in the AM DXing game for any length of time, you will have heard about the GE SuperRadio series. These were built specifically to pull in AM stations and make 'em sound good. The SuperRadio series represents the last dying gasp of GE (and later RCA) to produce a quality table-top AM radio for the general consumer market, and they did a great job. The AM performance of this radio is outsanding, due both to its sensitive (though not particularly selective) receiver, and it's huge speaker. The radio is clean, with just a few marks and some odd small white paint streaks on the back (my Dad must have been listening to it when he was painting). It works both on AC mains and on battery, and  you'll get a chance to test that before you buy, because I'll throw in a set of fresh D-cells.

The FairPlay wind-up radio was one of the top-of-the line FairPlay products they offered. The idea was that the profits from the sale of these radios would help provide free radios in third world countries. I bought this at the Radio Shack in Fayetteville in the early 2000s and it's actually not a bad radio, performance wise. The wind-up mechanism works differently that most wind-up radios today. This radio has an enormous spring wind mechanism that directly drives power for the radio, unlike most emergency wind-up radios today, which use the cranking motion to charge a lithium battery or large capacitors. This means the FairPlay is a bit mechanically noisy as it's 'unwinding' - that's normal, and part of the charm. If you are old enough to remember the old Remco Mr. Machine wind-up robots from the 60's, that's what this looks like on the inside. It's quirky, it's fun. And I guarantee you'll be the only one on  your block to own one!

I'm asking $30 each for these radios, or $50 for the pair.

Palstar SP30H Speaker

(Added April 21, 2024)

If you want a big speaker for big sound, this is it. The audio out of this is exceptional, but alas it no longer fits on my rig shelf - it's a pretty big speaker.  It's in excellent working and cosmetic condition. These speakers currently sell new for over $250. I'll let this one go for $150

Comet HFJ-350M 'Toy Box' Antenna Set for QRP Rigs

(Updated April 21, 2024)

The HFJ-350M antenna set was released when the Icom IC-705 hit the market. While designed as an IC-705 accessory, it can be used with any QRP rig.

I'll be right up front with you - these antennas don't have a great reputation. Oh, the quality if first rate - it's a Comet, after all. But lots of buyers just can't seem to get the thing to tune properly to achieve an acceptable SWR. I've used this two or three times with varying success, then moved over to the Elecraft AX-1 antenna system.

These sell today for around $100. I'll let you have this one, virtually new in the case, for $60

RSPlay Duo (RSP2)

(Added April 21, 2024)

I had this set up as a sub-receiver to one of my IC-7300, but decided it added a level of complexity I didn't need, so it got taken out of service. This is an earlier version of the dual-receive RSPduo, but still a very robust and very viable receiver. In excellent cosmetic and operational condition

Price is $75

Check back soon for more offerings. And thanks!
