Rachel is focusing on environmental health and watershed engineering with an interest in wastewater treatment and manufacturing. In Fall 2019 and Summer 2020, she interned at WestRock’s West Point, VA papermill in their environmental department. There, she focused on reducing nitrogen in outflows and running the mill’s recycling program. She also interned at Celanese in Narrows, VA as an environmental intern in Summer 2021. In this position, Rachel worked with landfill leachate and started the plant’s recycling program from scratch. She will be returning to this location for a full time position after graduation. At Virginia Tech, Rachel is an RA for the Honors Residential Commons, Membership Vice President for Circle K international, a Biological Systems Engineering Student Ambassador, and a Violinist for the Newman Community Choir. She also participates in enology and fermentation research with the Food Science and Technology department. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys reading books outside in her hammock, playing Mariokart with friends, and watching old movies.
Nathaniel (Natty) Abrahams is focusing on watershed science and environmental health engineering and is interested in ecological restoration, wetlands, watershed management, and climate change mitigation. In 2021, he interned with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Cape Cod, MA as a Civil Engineering Trainee. He spent 1.5 years with Dr. Durelle Scott’s Hydrologic Analysis Research Program assisting the Virginia DEQ with hydrologic data science projects. Additionally, Natty has 3 years of experience in outdoor recreation leadership with Virginia Tech’s Venture Out program and 5 years of outdoor education experience teaching at the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies in Capon Bridge, WV. In his free time, Natty enjoys playing guitar, backpacking, rock climbing, and exploring the NRV.
