Steve Trost

I am a Lecturer for the Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Prior to that I was a Collegiate Assistant Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech. I specialize in teaching large principles of economics classes (25,000 students and counting!).

From time to time I do work on economics pedagogy. My current research looks at expectations, confidence, and performance in principles of economics courses. In general I am trying to understand when and why students who are underrepresented in economics become disillusioned with economics.

I am also looking for ways to rethink the economics curriculum (especially at the Principles level) to shift focus to market failures as well as ways that markets fail people. While understanding markets is essential, it is just as important to understand the limitations of those markets.

Otherwise I am an economic generalist who sees econ in everything and tries to share that sight with my students.
