Immersive Embodiment to Generate Empathy for Trans PeoplE

Problem Definition

The team included me, Kylie Davidson, and Ibrahim Tahmid. I was thoroughly involved in all stages of the project.

Work we got inspired by

The Key is an immersive story about refugees who lose their homes. This experience is designed to generate empathy through immersive storytelling.

1,000 Cut Journey: In this immersive virtual-reality experience, the viewer becomes Michael Sterling, a black man, encountering racism as a young child, adolescent, and young adult. 1,000 Cut Journey highlights the social realities of racism, for understanding racism is the essential first step in promoting effective, collective social action and achieving racial justice.

Our goal was to build on this work to understand how to develop an immersive embodiment experience to generate empathy toward the transgender community

Why is this effective?

Research Questions

We collected data from transgender individuals' experiences by using a questionnaire survey. We then conducted semi-structured interviews to gather data regarding specific experiences and also include stakeholders working with the transgender community.

Thematic Analysis

After collecting responses to the questionnaire and the interviews, we ran a thematic analysis to gather themes within the data.

Before Running our Thematic Analysis, we use LDA for topic modeling. Using the model, we were able to identify 2 themes within the data. We labeled these topics as trauma/pain and one discussing questioning/coming out.

We conducted the thematic analysis on a Miro Board.
