BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech (5-2, 1-1 ACC) hosted No. 1 ranked Boston College (6-0, 2-0), who remain undefeated after dominating the Hokies Saturday afternoon.
It was pure domination from the start by the Eagles, who won the game 21-5. Just as they’ve done all season, they claimed Tech as yet another victim of which they’ve scored at least 20 points against.
Boston College didn’t let up once, and it continued to pour it on up until the final whistle blew, truly living up to its reputation as the country’s best team.
The game opened up with Boston College jumping out to an early lead thanks to Emma LoPinto, who scored in the very first minute. Tech answered just two minutes later with a goal of its own from Lauren Render. However, Maria Themelis put the Eagles back in front almost immediately after.
From then on, it was all Boston College. Molly Driscoll and Maria Themelis both scored before Tech even won its next possession.
After a goal from Kylee Colbert and a stunning display of two goals in the same minute from Rachel Clark, Tech looked hopeless after giving up seven goals early.
Yet, the Hokies showed signs of life just before the end of the first period after Mia Pozzi and Sophia Trahan scored back-to-back goals.
That momentum, though, was short lived. Just like the first period, Boston College scored within the first minute of the second period off the stick of Mckenna Davis. Then it was more of the same. The Eagles looked like a well-oiled machine, refusing to make mistakes. Boston College scored nine goals to Tech’s none, all within the second period.
The Eagles continued imposing their will throughout the second half of the game. Even though Tech refused to go down without a fight, they only managed two goals for the rest of the game, which is three less than Boston College scored in the same amount of time.
It seemed like everyone on the team was joining in on the fun and getting their turn at a goal, pushing Boston College’s total to twenty-one goals by the end of the match.
Boston College’s offensive scheme proved to be too much for Tech to keep up with. On the defensive side, their keeper, Shea Dolce read the Tech offense like a book. Every chance the Hokies got seemed to be thwarted by her.
Rachel Clark and Emma LoPinto each had stellar performances, both scoring five goals a piece. They played with such confidence that made it seem as though they could do whatever they wanted.
On the bright side for Tech, midfielder Lauren Render had two goals of her own and shined for the Hokies despite the loss.
Boston College will look to continue their undefeated season on Tuesday against Dartmouth, while the Hokies hope to bounce back vs Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET in Blacksburg.
