About Visva-Bharati Santiniketan

Visva-Bharati, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, Asia's first Nobel Laureate, is not just a university—it's a symbol of his unique educational vision, blending traditional Indian values with global humanism. Since 1951, Visva Bharati is a Central University and an Institution of National Importance led by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India as the Chancellor and Hon'ble President of India as the Visitor.

The University is blessed with twin campuses Santiniketan (Abode of Peace) & Sriniketan, (Abode of Prosperity). Rabindranath Tagore was the forerunner of "Tapovan" system of Education, and the idea of East meeting the West, which formed the philosophical foundation of Visva-Bharati.

Visva-Bharati, through its foundation in Indian Knowledge Systems and Language Plurality, offers a timeless model for education that is rooted in Indian civilizational values yet globally connected. Tagore's vision invites us to balance tradition with modernity, and identity with universality. Tagore has been the Forerunner visionary of Modern Agriculture. In fact, the very purpose of Sriniketan Experiment was to promote self sustaining rural societies, with active involvement of the villagers themselves, and preserving the harmony between human and nature. His holistic educational vision, conceived over a century ago, finds renewed expression in New Education Policy-2020. Visva-Bharati has thus emerged as a centre for excellence in Arts, Music, Literature, Education, Agriculture, Rural Reconstruction, Yoga and Basic Sciences.

With this uniqueness Visva-Bharati Santiniketan was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023 and at present the University hosts Heritage Walks to connect Tagore and his ideas to global visitors.

From the inception of Santiniketan, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore imagined a close relationship between the educational institution and trade practices to elevate the community. Maharshi made provisions for local fair during the Poush Mela so that local activities would receive financial impetus.
