Ms. Ross 6th Grade STEM
Welcome to Ms. Ross's 6th grade STEM Website!
The Common Core standards take the previous California State Standards to the next level, where students "experience a balanced approach to instruction and learning that supports conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application of mathematics to real-world problems." (http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/documents/mathfwcoverfrontmatter.pdf)
At VIDA, we employ multiple strategies to present, practice, and assess student understanding of the standards. All math teachers across the district have been working together to compile resources to supplement our district adopted text, College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) in order to provide students with a challenging depth of content. Some of those resources include: the Irvine Math Project (IMP), i-Ready Adaptive Diagnostic Assessment, and ST Math.
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are the new California state science standards. The entire Vista Unified School District is part of a group of "early implementers" of these new standards. "What differentiates the CA NGSS from previously-adopted California science standards is the way the CA NGSS weave together the three dimensions (scientific and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts) of the Framework across the NGSS scientific disciplines (physical science, life science, and earth and space science), with engineering, technology, and practical applications of science." (NGSS Implementation Plan) At VIDA, all of our science classes are implementing these new standards to provide our students with the best possible science education.
