Zurich 1953 was a chess tournament won by Vasily Smyslov. It was a Candidates Tournament for the 1954 World Chess Championship, which led to the match between Smyslov and Mikhail Botvinnik. The tournament is famous for the strength of the players, the high quality of the games, and books on the tournament by David Bronstein and Miguel Najdorf that are regarded as among the best tournament books ever written. In May 2022 Yuri Averbakh died at the age of 100, having been the last living player to have played in the tournament.

The Candidates tournament of 1953 is well remembered by generations of chess players because David Bronstein's book (we now know that Boris Veinstein was an uncredited collaborator) has been recommended to improving players over the years. For many years English readers were unaware there were other tournament books on the event. Now Miguel Najdorf's has been translated and made available in English. John Watson reviews Najdorf's version and compares it with Bronstein's.

Zurich 1953: 15 Contenders for the World Chess Championship is a superb book. Familiarity with this tournament is essential to a well-rounded chess education, and Najdorf's exposition is easily the best and most entertaining available. I should warn you in advance that some reviewers have complained about poor editing, and it does seem that there are more errors than we have come to expect from a Russell Enterprises production. But the true chess fan (or anyone who enjoys chess, for that matter), will easily be able to see past the occasional technical glitch and appreciate this for one of the finest tournament books ever produced. I love this edition, and am grateful that I can finally enjoy it in English. 006ab0faaa
