I need a huawei modem unlocker for Ubuntu 14. My modem is a permanently locked one(Customized Firmware). So I usually temporary unlock it in windows 7, and then reboot and boot to Ubuntu for it to work. However I share my pc with other users and they cannot understand or perform the method of booting to windows for unlocking followed by rebooting to Ubuntu, every time they need to use internet. Here is a link to the software I use on windows 7 to temporary unlock my modem: -content/uploads/2012/11/Huawei-Modem-Unlocker.zip. I have tried using this on wine but it cannot detect any ports. I have tried using the "mcphail/linux_huawei_unlocker" but is doesn't work with modern modems such as my e173 u-i as the developer himself "Neil McPhail" told me. I have tried using the following command prompt methods: -3g-modems-and-using-them-on-other-networks/, -tweaks-to-unlock-huawei-modem.html, -3g-usb-dongles-in-linux/ but they all cannot unlock my device. As regards to using mobile partner to manually insert the unlock code when prompted, my modem has a customized firmware therefore the usual mobile partner unlock code prompt was removed and replaced with "only specified sim can be used on this modem". I have tried flashing it with firmwares but since it has a cutomized firmware from my simcard provider's company, It cannot be flashed with normal huawei firmware upgrades/downgrades. Linux Modem Manager does not prompt for unlock code as well. Please if enyone knows of a temporary modem unlocker that works in linux, please help. Also please inform honestly if I'm out of luck. Even Dc unlocker(paid) doesn't unlock my modem. Thanks

-Blog/solvedubuntu1010andhuaweie160e12d1140c did not work at all. I deem the issue there is different from mine as my modem is locked by sim provider's firmware, not a detection problem at all. Essentialy, when it is unlocked in windows 7 via huawei unlocker( -content/uploads/2012/11/Huawei-Modem-Unlocker.zip), it works fine and as long as I dont halt my pc or unplug modem, it stays unlocked. Rebooting does not relock it as well therefore allowing my to use in in ubuntu without problems. But I cannot seem to find a temporary unlocker for linux.

I ran I run lsb_release -a; uname -a; lsusb again but this time without my modem unlocked by windows 7 first. Here's the result with a different result at the "Bus 001 Device" line as you can see below:

1. If you enter a wrong pin for three times, the device gets locked and has to be unlocked with a PUK code.

2. Several network operators provide subsidized device, with a specific lock that they work only within their own network (SIM-lock)

3. Several devices (among them HUAWEI ones) can operate in two modes: when inserted they behave like a CD-Rom to provide software for installation (usually for Windows only), and when that software is installed, the devices is switching itself to work as GSM modem. The usb_modeswitch package should support that functionality on Ubuntu.

It's not easy to find cheap modems that have 3g and yet they suport all simcard due to the lack of such devices being sold in my area. Finding that sort of what you call cheap is actually very expesive due to lack of importation of such. Since I cannot achieve variant 2, I guess I have no other option than to stick with windows. Thank you all for your help.

Linux Huawei Unlocker is a tool that attempts to automatically remove the carrier lock on Huawei mobile broadband modems from the Linux command line. It automatically finds IMEIs, calculates unlock codes, checks SIM lock status, displays remaining unlock attempts, and asks the user for confirmation before trying the unlock code.

So you have got a carrier locked Archer MR200, and decided to unlock it to use with other carriers, great decision, after 2 weeks of searching, testing, I have come to the result that even if it seems impossible, the router/4G modem got unlocked.

Process

Once you have dumped your firmware, start off by flashing the OpenWRT firmware by using the guide linked above. Connect via WiFi (that is important), and goto 192.168.225.1/login.html, that is the Modem Web Console. Your Archer MR200 is basically a router with a 4G MiFi modem connected to it on the board, and OpenWRT allows you to access that modem.

You have successfully unlocked your modem. Now you need to flash your stock firmware and you will be good to go. Don't use MR200_Back_to_stock.bin provided in forums, it will brick your router since it has the stock bootloader and firmware.

why go back to OEM (or ISP) fw after unlocking the modem ?

just curious of your reasons...

I'm so happy with openwrt on my mr200 - with extra options like adblock, vpn, sqm - not even closely available on ofw

I have to admit I haven't unlocked my mr200 but 192.168.225.1 works and I can do all above from openwrt

I'd actually wanted to upload the unlock modem fw but considering the possible issues above (unusable with openwrt) I'd say I'll pass for now as I don't really need to switch WISP.

thanks for sharing this though - maybe you can add this to wiki - Applying for OpenWrt wiki account

So quick update, I did manage to fix everything except the Factory Reset function in the modem web console, it says it resets, but after the restart it shows the same configuration. Those additional settings are specific to the Mobile WiFi devices like the SD Card etc., so yeah.

How can I tell if the modem is unlocked? Because I tried with another SIM card which did not work. Could also be a prob with the new SIM or APN details. The new SIM works in my phone, and doesn't have a PIN set.

Nothing will be broken. It's just a modem update. Do it without any worries. There is no indication telling you if the modem is locked or not in the console, only the fact that you get Disconnected message every time you attempt to connect to the data network.

Hii ni ngumu sana, nilifikiria python ni nyoka inaonekana i thought wrong. Nikikuja Kenya naweza kukutafuta unisaidie ku unlock modem yangu? Am serious, i am not very computer literate. Nitakununulia chapati skate na madodo as payment (ask your watchiee what that means) !

could you please show me a step by step process of unlockin.

i got the unlock key but then do i need a software to unlock the key.is Minicom-s the software i need to succesfully unlock the modem and whre can i get it.

BT ships a variety of modems for its VDSL/Infinity product. There are ongoing discussions regarding the merits of each, but what all do have in common is that they are locked-down and inaccessible. The Huawei HG612 is theoretically the easiest to root, as described. The ECI B-FOCuS V-2FUb/I Rev. 1B can be unlocked via a serial connection without any need to replace the stock firmware.

Unlocking a modem is to lift / remove the restriction which locks the modem to only SIM cards of one carrier / service provider, thereby allowing the modem to support the SIM cards of other carriers / service providers. In simpler English, unlocking a modem allows you to use other networks SIM cards on the modem instead of just one.

Thanks @esemeniuc,

I will add the links to the list.

Also I am finishing the structured configuration notes as soon as I have a couple of minutes.

A script is probably needed to do the enabling of the modem, unblocking the radio, and maybe do the FCC unlock after each reboot or wake-up from suspend. So there are a lot of things to cause the error.

Using arch linux, Laptop is a Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 10. I am using gnome 3. I tried with modem-manager-gui and networkmanager. I got it running with networkmanager. modem-manager-gui did not get it unlocked.

Hi @BAJansen,

thanks for your info, I might try the Windows boot method.

The stupid roadblock that blocks me from using the modem seems to be that my model t14 is missing in the "fcc whitelist". I read the script that is used for the fcc unlock and couldn't find my model, so I contacted the engineer at Lenovo but so far without any success.

When the first FCC unlocked modems were shipped in Dell laptops sometime around 2015, users of GNU/Linux distributions started to report not being able to use their WWAN modules. These modems were rebranded Sierra Wireless devices, and surprisingly, using the Sierra Wireless provided kernel drivers the modules were unlocked successfully. This lead to finding the QMIDMSSWISetFCCAuth() operation (DMS 0x555F) in the Sierra SDK, which was successfully reverse engineered into libqmi 1.12.4.

In 2018, Dell included newer FCC locked modems, like the Foxconn rebranded DW5821e, in their laptops. Dell also provided a Windows unlock tool (DW5821e and DW5829e Click Cust Kit), and likely some built-in unlock tool hidden in the Ubuntu-based preinstallations they shipped in the laptops when sold with GNU/Linux. During this time, there were some attempts to reverse engineer the unlock procedure using a USB monitoring capture from Windows when running the Cust Kit tool, but none of them seemed to be usable for some reason.

This discussion went on for several months, both publicly in gitlab issues and mailing list, and privately via emails and calls with the laptop vendors, modem manufacturers and other key members of the community. After much thought a clear way forward was decided, that would hopefully meet halfway of both sides: ModemManager will keep on providing support for the known FCC unlock procedures, but no longer automatically: the user must install and select the FCC unlock procedure needed in the specific laptop being used.

Laptop vendors and modem manufacturers may also provide their own FCC unlock tools, e.g. running their own proprietary binary programs to perform the unlock in the safest way they know. These tools may be packaged for each distribution, and should be installed in ${libdir}/ModemManager/fcc-unlock.d.

The third party FCC unlock tools will allow an easy integration of the procedure with ModemManager, so that the unlock is performed only when required to do so (when attempting to go online) and not at random times (which would make the state of the modem cached by ModemManager inconsistent). 0852c4b9a8
