The flood came and took away all the scoffers and so will it be when the Son of Man comes. Until then, like Noah, we call all to turn and to trust the Savior. When they call us to sing the songs of Zion, we do so joyfully, to give witness to the truth of salvation and judgment, even as we know that we are waiting for Zion.

I think of it this way, Psalm 137 today: I am the danger approaching, we are. The danger that has come to stay. And they, the communities and nations whose children did not come home, are singing at the sight of us. Hard songs. Songs I often would prefer not to hear. But I am trying to listen. I am trying to listen to their songs, so that when we meet again (we live right next to each other, they must meet us whether they want to or not), the meeting might be something else than it is and has been. I am trying to listen so that we might become, with time, worthy of other songs.

Jeff Lippencott and I have produced this second collection of hymns and sacred music with the goal of helping the church offer worship that is true, good, and beautiful. We pray that these songs will bring glory to our Creator and lead His people into a greater love for Him.

This thesis contains an analysis of the concept of Zion as reflected in the songs sung by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The following definitional areas within Zion concept are considered:

1. Zion: A personal spiritual condition.

2. Zion: A perfect society.

3. Zion: Various geographical locations.

4. Events included in the concept of Zion.

Each of the above areas is analyzed first, from a historical and doctrinal viewpoint and finally, as to how it is reflected in the songs of the Mormons.

In May 2004, they released their first solo album, Motivando a la Yal. With hits such as "Doncella", "Bandida", and "Yo Voy" (featuring Daddy Yankee), the album reached gold certification]. With the reggaeton genre becoming a worldwide phenomenon, Zion and Lennox's popularity increased. Motivando a la Yal: Special Edition was released a year later. The special edition had new songs along with remixed songs of the previous edition, such as "Don't Stop", "Bachatalo", a remix to the song "Bandida", and a hip-hop remix of "Yo Voy" with Miri Ben-Ari, Fatman Scoop, and Pitbull entitled "Jump & Spread Out (DJ Precise and Cheeky Starr Version)".

Both Zion and Lennox are very active with solo songs. Zion has been more notable with songs like "Yo Voy a Llegar" for Reggaeton producer DJ Nelson's compilation album Flow la Discoteka, "Alcate" released on Luny Tunes's album Mas Flow 2.5, and "Con Ella Me Quedare" released in the fifth installment of the Alex Gargolas series, entitled Gargolas: The Next Generation. He also has turned up a new hit, "Que Pasara", for DJ Nelson's Flow la Discoteka 2. Zion has released a solo album entitled The Perfect Melody on June 5, 2007, with appearances by artists such as Akon and Play-n-Skillz. "The Way She Moves" is the lead single from the album and features Akon. Lennox has been working on songs on his own album, but has also been very active in bringing new artist to his label "Toma Enterprise". The label is set to release an album named Los Mero Meros.

Zion y Lennox's music is much different than mainstream reggaeton. What truly distinguishes them from other artists is that they typically sing about love and relationships, similar to RKM y Ken-Y(in 1970s R&B fashion) and refrain from the typical obscene sex, drugs and violence lyrics heard in a lot of other reggaeton and hip hop songs

Like many other enslaved people, Mary and Mama believed a better day would come. Mama had a great voice and loved to sing. She passed that gift to Mary. Mama led most of the songs during church; Mary always joined in.

Like Mary and Mama praying and singing songs of Zion all those years ago, Negro spirituals still bring a sense of comfort to many African Americans. They serve as a reminder to never forget the past and always believe a better day will come.

And today? Based on largely anecdotal evidence, most of the songs sung at Jewish summer camps are written by contemporary American Jewish composers. By and large, our American Jewish youth are not singing the songs of Zion.

The Zionist thinker Ahad Ha-am hoped that the reborn state would become the cultural center of the Jewish world, with a new kind of Torah coming forth from Zion. Without Israeli songs on our lips, we lose a connection between American Jewish youth and Israeli culture. A pop culture connection represents the opportunity to see an Israel that goes beyond the crisis narrative, an Israel that is rich, vibrant, cool, sophisticated. And in fact, as I have learned from Yossi Klein Halevi, a meticulous observer and fan of this music, the music is better than ever, with much to say and teach.

We are responsive to the local contexts and cultures of Southwest Texas. We delight in the riches from our past, as well as the gems in our new songs. We incorporate global music, the music of many nations and cultures, into worship. In short, we have a love of the past, a passion for the present, and excitement for the future.

A week prior to his passing, Zumbi had announced that him and fellow Zion I member and producer Amp Live would be touring to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Mind Over Matter. I told myself I was going to that show even if I went alone. Unfortunately, that show never came to be. But myself and the rest of Zumbi's fans will always have his music to remember him by. In honor of Zumbi and his legacy as a Bay Area hip-hop legend, here is an unranked list of the 10 best Zion I songs that capture his brilliance. ff782bc1db
