Thank you for the answer. We only backup the user data and configuration but not the binaries of Zimbra. I like the approach of the script very much and it will help to verify the integrity of our zimbra instaces. I will put it in a routine check with a small monitoring alert. I am looking forward to further developments.

Hi same here: I just started testing mailspring as an alternative for Zimbra installations we do provide for numerous clients in the EMEA space. Mailspring could make it as an alternative to the zimbra web client, which has some issues, too.

I also have the same problem with zimbra. Most of the emails just disappear and reappear after clearing the cache. However, they disappear systematically after 15-20 minutes every time the cache is cleared.

Errors, warnings and other logging events are logged by category. For example, an IMAP error will be logged to the log4j.logger.zimbra.imap sub-category. The category settings in log4j are stored in two configuration files.

/opt/zimbra/conf/log4j.properties allows you to make a temporary changes to the logging level. Any changes to /opt/zimbra/conf/log4j.properties will be reset by the configurations stored in /opt/zimbra/conf/log4j.properties.in after the mailboxd service has been restarted.

To make permanent changes to the configuration file, make changes to /opt/zimbra/conf/log4j.properties.in, and either run zmmailboxdctl restart or restart the server using zmcontrol restart .

Enabling DEBUG in the appropriate sub-category can help you identify a problem. If you do not know what sub-category to enable, you can enable DEBUG in log4j.logger.zimbra, however this will generate logging events for every single subcategory. This is a very large amount of logging events and can take a long time to read through. For this reason, it is always advisable to enable DEBUG or another logging level in a specific sub-category.To enable logging for a specific category, add the following to the end of the log4j configuration file:

Log output is directed to a log file by an appender. If an appender is not specified for a category, it inherits the appender of its parent category. By default, log output is directed to /opt/zimbra/log/mailbox.log. Additionally, Syslog captures FATAL and ERROR level events.

You can also direct log output for a specific category to multiple appenders. In this example, the log4j.logger.zimbra category is writing logging events to the both LOGFILE and to SYSLOG appenders.

I understand how "Let's Encrypt" deploys certificates, reasonably well, and I also understand how Zimbra "re-deploys" those certificates for his purposes. I am under the impression that there should be a renewal script for Zimbra, but "certbot-zimbra.sh" doesn't work in the ways I have tried, which means that I have not made a proper request.

This command searches the /var/log/zimbra.log file to trace emails and when I view the log (/var/log/zimbra.log), the logs only go back to around 03:30 on the same day. After further investigation it looks like the log file is being archived each day as a .gz file so the trace is only searching the current day's logs.


Hello! I am using Joplin mobile client for Android version 2.8.1. I have been syncing to the cloud using nextcloud (version 23) and that has worked great for me since I started using it. I turned a friend onto Joplin and he is trying to sync to his Briefcase on a Zimbra mail server running version 8.8.15_P33. We used the WebDAV URL in the zimbra client as suggested and had no luck.

So after a lot of reading on the zimbra forums, going over the error messages in the log and some futzing around with the URL format I figured it out. In case anyone needs to sync with Zimbra email platforms, what it came down to was using %40 in place of the @ symbol. I saw it in the log, so I thought why not try it in the URL string, and it worked.

As mentioned previously, when an email with a RAR archive attachment is received, it is automatically extracted for analysis by Amavis via unrar. In Zimbra, most services, including the Amavis server, run as the zimbra user.

When an attacker has successfully exploited the unrar vulnerability on a Zimbra instance, they can execute arbitrary system commands as the zimbra user. At the time of writing, a publicly known privilege escalation from zimbra to root exists, along with exploit code. The vulnerability was discovered by Darren Martyn.

We notified Zimbra of this bug so that they could issue a warning to their users and patch their cloud instances. We also mentioned the fact that most services run as the zimbra user made exploitation of this issue possible. Zimbra has addressed this issue by configuring Amavis to use 7z instead of unrar to extract incoming RAR attachments.

If we add the records which are required, the zimbra wouldn't start work properly. But we want to keep both servers as online. Yes, I tried to add MX record of O365, and faced with the problem incoming email to old server, and noticed that o365 by default requires priority 0. The only solution is to migrate all users to O365 and add MX record. As temp solution is as you said onmicrosoft.com , I used forward from Zimbra to O365, and in case if user will send email to onmicrosft.com forward from onmicrosft,com to zimbra using Contact on exchange. And enabled external forwarding whoch is disabled by default.
