Phantom Knight

Project Snapshot

Phantom Knight is a single player 2D platformer game for Android. The player plays as the phantom knight trying to escape from the castle. The player traverses through obstacles by platforming and puzzle-solving to reach the end of each level. The unique mechanic in the game is switching timelines and dynamic orbs: Switching timelines changes orb functionality which helps in platforming and puzzle-solving.

Description

What is this game about?

  • This game is about the phantom knight is trying to escape from the castle where he was in search for an ancient relic that possessed the power to control time. It is a 2D platformer where the player moves around and solves puzzles with two different types of orbs. They try to find the solution to the puzzle by using these orbs dynamically by power of time manipulation granted by the relic. His goal is to get to the throne and return to human form.


Why did you choose this project?

  • A 2d platformer game was well suited for our scope.

  • Combining platforming and puzzle-solving seems like an interesting idea

  • We started with the ghost, portals, and timeline switching concept

  • We wanted the player to flow through levels in an interesting way

  • We wanted a single game object to have multiple uses and functionalities


When did you do it?

  • We started working on this project since October 2021, and lasts around 3 months


How was this project beneficial to team members?       

  • We enhanced our team communication skills

  • We enhanced our skills to communicate with stakeholders

  • We enhanced our understanding about how a team game project is run

  • We enhanced our technical skills in unity, and in different specialties according to our roles

  • We enhanced our skills to take feedbacks from play testers and how to incorporate them

Design

I am responsible for the level 3 and level 4. Here are the design thoughts:

1.  It is a tutorial of the portal mechanism. The player will learn the portal could transport the orb.

  • The player needs to change timeline to shoot the red orb

  • Shoot the red orb into the portal, it will go out from another portal and hit the button

  • Pay attention to the arrow, it is designed for marking the entrance of the portal, the portal transportation is one-way

2.  Reinforce the tutorial of using portal, the player could also choose to use the former learned skill to press the button.

  • The player has freedom to choose the methods for passing this area.

3.  A tutorial for teaching the player how to use two portals to build orbs’ loop.

  • The player should shoot the orb into the portal below, the orb will come out from above and enter the portal below. Then the loop is finished.

  • Change the timeline and use blue orbs to dash up towards the higher place. It is the combination of portal, blue orb, and red orb mechanism, which has a lot of creative space.

4.  Reinforce the skill about making loops between two portals and build a “ladder” by that

  • Shoot the orbs into the portal to build the loop, which can be used as a “ladder”

  • Since there is a big gap, the player now has the risk of falling and being killed. For the pacing, I think it is an appropriate setting.

1.   It is a challenge for the skill of portal orb looping, now the player needs to transport orb from one “ladder” to make another “ladder”

  •  Shoot the orb and make the orbs loop between two portals, then change orb to be blue orb and jump onto it, then dash towards the higher platform. It needs skillful manipulation, but the player could choose to shoot more orbs into the portal to ease it.

  • For the second part, the player needs to shoot an orb into the further portal from the position of the first two portals, so the player needs to be careful not to fall while shooting the orb the player is attached to. However, the player can also choose to shoot long distances from the middle platform. The strategy is various for player to choose from.

2.  Transition area of the level, with simple puzzles to reinforce shooting orbs and build loops. The puzzle is combined with former gate & button mechanism.

  • Player should press the button and the first gate will lift up

  • Shoot orbs and make orb loop, also the player needs one orb to shoot at the button on the right side to open the second gate

3.  Still about making orb loop, but this time the player needs to shoot diagonally since the portal is set diagonally. Also, there is a hidden road.

  • Shoot orbs diagonally into the portal and build diagonal “ladder” for bashing 

  • However, if the player falls, there is a hidden road downside. It needs the player to fall precisely onto the orb to dash into the secret room. Press the button, and a platform will appear, and the player can go to the other side by the platform. This is an easier path designed for someone feeling frustrated for the puzzle.
