This cardboard dinosaur is Hamo, a play-chair made for children in kindergarten. Considering that it's for little kids, we didn't make it in a normal chair way, but scaling it up to stimulate and cultivate kids' curiosity and sport ability. Moreover, the dinosaur shape can, in a certain degree, arouse kids' emotional attachment, making Hamo to be children's best dino buddy.
Observation & Brainstorm
This was the first time we went to kindergarten, playing with kids and knowing their interests. After observation, we started ideating with the concept: "A chair but not only a chair." And we created various "weird" chairs.
We then made a 1:3 model and brought it to kindergarten, where we gained lots of insights and of course unexpected results from kids.
Making
Components making is the most difficult part. We had to decide the size for kids, which took us a lot of efforts to measure. And during the process, we found it hard to control the accuracy for each component, causing lots of troubles when assembling them.
Eventually, Hamo indeed became children's best dino buddy. What we initially imagined was 3 or 4 kids on Hamo at the same time, but we couldn't hold kids back, and Hamo's structural intensity was also far beyond our expectations.
HIGHLIGHT: Hamo was the first product that I engaged the whole design process, which was extremely meaningful to me, so I put Hamo here. When developing the concept, we didn't mean to design a chair, but an opportunity to sit, and that's why we made Hamo nothing to do with a normal chair's shape, but still became the most popular "chair" among kids.
