Artist Statement
Art is an escape, a tool of self expression, and a means of communication. All of these things are very important to me in my personal life and in my artworks. I want my art not only to tell the story of me, of my characters, but also to be able to give people places to escape to. I blend a mix of traditional and digital mediums, as well as a few 3D works, in order to fully tell my story. My work is heavily character centered, though I use these characters to ground my artwork in emotion and storytelling.
My artworks blend a unique mix of rendering and texture, focusing both on painterly and more line heavy aspects. I love to use harsh, almost blinding lights and deep dark shadows, playing with perception. Hair, eyes and hands are always focal points of my art, as I believe they always hold the most emotion and memory within a person.
My artistic and storytelling journey has been a pursuit for as long as I can remember. What started as childhood doodling quickly turned into characters and then worlds and then stories of my own, all living in my head. It is a sort of comforting company that they provide, helping me to never feel alone, and that is something I hope desperately to pass on.
My own goals are to work as a character designer or concept artist, but also to publish my own books in order to tell my own stories. Emotion plays such a heavy role in my artwork because I come from a very emotionally unavailable home, and it is important to me not only to be able to express my own emotions but to help others feel and process their own. My hope for people who view my work is to think, to feel, and allow themselves a momentary escape from the harshness of reality. In places where words are hard, I hope my art can speak in its place. I truly believe that art connects us as a whole, and especially nowadays people need that more than ever.
