Overview

Lab Rat is a 2D educational quiz game created by a group of students. The original logo was created without much thought and was more of a requirement.

The aim of the redesign is to make the logo more professional in order to make the game more appealing to a wider audience.

The game is set in a chemistry lab and the player plays as a rat that answers questions in order to escape.

Research

Initial Sketches

Sketches related to mouse, science or chemistry-related logos.

Sketches related to fonts, words & initials.

Sketches featuring big fonts with chemistry and science related elements.

Digital Sketches

After physical sketches, I took the ones that look the most appealing to me, and created some digital sketches and various renditions on Illustrator, playing around with different line thicknesses and varying placements in order to add more interest to the overall design.

Chosen Designs

After playing around with the variations, I narrowed down to three final designs.

I chose these three designs as it is has the most distinct compared to the rest and it integrates both the mouse as well and the rounded beaker elements smoothly while still being definitive.

Playing with Colours

Next, I played around with colour variations with different combinations.

Final Design

This design is a mix of minimalist while mixing the element of a rat and chemistry, which fulfills the aim of the project to make the logo more professional. The green was chosen to give off a clinical or lab setting while keeping the entire logo clean by leaving the rest of it monochromatic.

Takeaways

Exploration: I have always been a firm believer of creating ideas straight from my own creative library, and never explored much out of my comfort zone or ideas that I already have. This project pushed my creative boundaries, encouraged me to research and deep dive into the various types of existing logos.
