The Wall in Between: The Fight for Accessible Materials

The diverse approach of concepts within Science has a path of itself that is very interesting to tackle. Its definition states that it is a study that emphasizes the existence of things involved in our nature, consisting of different branches and grasping each distinct process of it as well. Our reach to the subject matter is essential, allowing the community to discover reality's truth.
One must pursue to acquire the necessary knowledge that values Science as a source of understanding how the world works. In our educational institutions such as schools and universities, students are granted the chance to obtain certain references, consisting of contents that are related to the requirements intended for the curriculum that they are enrolled in.
We currently know that there is something that provides these references, but why do we still suffer from lacking scientific knowledge? Primarily, it is because not all people and children can acquire similar opportunities that are granted to those that can afford quality learning.
Millions of children are suffering poverty, where they give more attention to their basic resources, rather than their education. In households affected by poverty, only 60% of family members here in the Philippines have finished their studies at the elementary level, according to Next Step Philippines.
Students who can't supply the price of going to private schools have the choice of studying at government-supported institutions, known as public schools. Inquirer reports that almost 22 million students are enrolled in public institutions for this academic year. These schools provide learners different books and references that tackle the proposed curriculum that will be taught to such students, including topics related to Science and Technology, without the expense that is similar to private schools.
The Department of Education (DepEd) is the primary branch of the government that facilitates public education here in our state. This year, there was an agreement that the allocated budget given to this department is about 606.5 billion pesos for 2021, stated by GMA. If we divide the DepEd funds by the data concerning the number of public school students, we will gather a result of P27,568 per public school student for this year.
The result collected is quite decent, but we should put in mind that our education transitioned to distance learning because of this pandemic, giving a meaning that more budget will be spent. This includes the expenses for sustaining the equipment and the internet connection of teachers that are instructing through online classes, while in modular learning, the cost of printers, photocopy machines, and bond papers comes in great effect.
Even in private schools, the inability to access laboratories and facilities have prevented them to have experiments and personal applications where they can use appropriate equipment, but are still paying for fees almost similar to traditional education, covering the amount required for the acquisition of a personal Learning Management System (LMS) account and their equipment and references as well.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has expressed that improvements to Science allow the Philippine economy to grow. It was given attention because of information given by the agency, that out of 128 countries, the Philippines ranked 73rd in the matter of Science Technology and Innovation Index (STI). STI refers to the attentiveness that a certain economy gives to different researches and findings that tackles innovation.
Science and educational programs should be initialized by the governing body. Students are willing to grasp reference materials for them to learn and be knowledgeable, but the system that we have right now denies most students to enjoy the privilege that is being enjoyed by those that can afford it.
With what was presented, it is not the fault of the government entirely, but they should emphasize fixing the current system of education and poverty here in the Philippines and prioritize the sufficient access of the public to Science. The support that we will exert to the body of knowledge will be vital in the future, as modernization suggests utilizing it.
