Megan Astrid Nuñez, member of the Board of Advisers of Know Your Rights Philippines (KYRPH) reiterated the importance of protecting one's information and data in the cyberspace during the Student Government Federation's webinar last October 17, 2020 in collaboration with KYRPH.
“Internet is both the best and worst invention. One day, it gives you glory but the next day, it may ruin your life. It is always incumbent upon us to protect and nurture our honor and reputation and never solely depend our safe space to the confines of the law,” Nuñez stated, advising everyone to be vigilant while practicing proper netiquette.
Together with two more guests namely, Atty. MJ Mendones Moran and Mrs. Joyen Melca, Nuñez discussed about Cybercrime Prevention wherein Nuñez said, “It is your discretion up to what extent you would want to disclose your information. Once you put your data or information to that site, that is no longer private, everything will go public. So you don’t expect privacy protection.”
“Don’t expect any protection or privacy in social media platforms. Even though your uploaded post is set for friends only, it does not mean that any FB user has protected expectation of privacy in all of his or her FB activities,” She further stated.
Meanwhile, the Webinar also addressed that divulging too much personal information should be avoided to curtail those ill-motivated persons from copying your identity and data for illegitimate purpose.
“I hope that we will always remember that cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. It is our obligation to protect our own information and data because threats on cyberspace do not only attack our financial and social status, but it may ruin our image and reputation,” Nuñez stated before proceeding to the final part of the webinar.
The webinar was the second episode in the webinar series formed through the collaboration of USANT SGF and KYRPH.
